What a nice surprise. Many people have counted out Chen Long, it will be so awesome if he wins gold again. I always have rooted for him even wnen I stopped following badminton for some time. Mainly cuz I feel he gets too much disrespect even from chinese badminton fans as they are mostly Lin Dan or Lee Chong wei supporters.
His wife is wang shixian. She was herself a top female badminton player. Although not Olympics champ.
I think it's just because he has a less flamboyant playstyle and personality.
Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei are legends and way more exciting to watch and follow
Yes his playing style less distinctive and he is are up against legends who dominated the game for ages, there is a going to be backlash.
Same as djokovic when he came up against federer and Nadal. He is far less popular and sometimes hated.
I just hope Chen gets more support. A big reason his detractors always use against him is he perform very poorly in team competition but better in individual competitions. I think it's overstated but sadly it became a rod to beat him with.
