Zhu Yaming won Silver in Men’s Triple Jump!
America won 1st and 2nd at this event in 2016 and didn't even make the podium here. They're underperforming at everything.

Was Zhu a medal contender at all? This silver completely sneaked up on me. Didnt know China had a medal contender in triple jump. The women's shot put and men's 100m are known athletes but this one is a nice surprise.
Just checked, his best was Asian games gold, he never medal in world's championship but this is a new PB for him and he got a silver in Olympics final. Nice!

No, Zhu best personal record before today was approximately 17.40. However, another Chinese contender got bronze in Rio so China is quite competitive in triple jump.
Zhu was also 2nd in qualifying so I didn't think it came as a complete shock.
The US Triple Jump Rio gold medal winner Christian Taylor got injured before Tokyo. Silver medal Will Claye barely qualified for the US team which means he is not in good shape. However, Will Claye is still favorite to win silver and Zhu for Bronze.
Ah I see. Thanks for the background info. I remember china had a Olympic bronze before but thought it was in high jump. Mixed them up.
