The US military could hire psychiatrists and doctors from the civilian sector, or contract medical work to civilian doctors/psychiatrists. The US military should have helped him if he was being picked on by peers for being a Muslim and for disagreeing with how the wars are being conducted. The US military is making too many errors in its ME wars

In my experience more than 50% of doctors working in US Military hospital are civilians.

It appears that soilders who desert /go awol are offered a free pass if they are prepared to deploy to Iraq or Afganistan.

Exactly my point. The US military could have hired other doctors or psychiatrists. How desperate were they for this one misfit? He could have easily paid off his debts and penalty to the US ROTC. He was clearly having serious work-related problems, and he should have been fired.
