航空母舰sounds perfectly fine, because the term has been used for decades now, the same goes with 两栖攻击舰
航空母舰 [ literally means mother ship that carries aircarft] has a fleet of orgainic aircaft, 两栖攻击舰 eg 075whose purpose is carrying landing craft for shore landing purposes and accompanied by helicpoters, vertical take- offs ...

So 075 is the mothership for all these assets just like an aircraft carrier is the mothership for airplanes. The amphibious assets are not mere ammunition for the 075 to fire. These assets are deployed from 075. And expect to return to the 075. That’s what makes 075 a mothership.

Except based on the command/rank structure, 075s are commanded by Captains just like the PLAN's destroyers.... whereas both the Shandong and Liaoning are commanded by Senior Captains (NATO equivalent of a Commodore), who then report to the Carrier Battle Group commander (who holds the rank of Rear Admiral).

So while the 075s (or at least the Hainan) uses the provincial vessel naming system, rank and file would suggest the CMC and the PLAN sees the 075 as just another ship in the fleet rather than a flag ship.

an ambitious assault ship may not be as prestigious or powerful and asset as the large aircraft carrier, but that does not make them any less of a mothership.

Also, the equivalency between senior captains in the PLAN and Nato is complicated by the fact PLAN’s rank structure, like that of russian naval rank structure, has 7 steps below flag rank, where as NATO rank has 6. and chinese structure has 3 flag ranks, NATO structure 4. That does not mean the highest non-flag rank in the chinese navy is therefore equivalent to the lowest flag rank in NATO. the responsibility of a flag officers still differs from those of a senior non-flag officers.

But PLAN Senior captain not a flag officer and so not the equivalent of commodore in navies that regard commodore as the lowest flag rank.
Regardless of NATO or PLA/Soviet/Russian rank structure, matter of fact is that the commander/political commissar of the 075 shares a similar rank as say a 055 or 052D, rather than the commander/political commissar of of an aircraft carrier.

That may be. However if the Chinese navy were to ever fight to take over Taiwan, I think the highest officer afloat and having theater level authority over all naval forces including carriers will more likely hoist his flag in an amphibious warfare ship like the 075 than on any aircraft carrier.
