071 LPD thread

Indeed it is interesting and actually in my post #1878 page 94 I counted 66 vehicles could fit

That's 4 columns of 12 rows in the well deck with 9 in the front compartment and another 9 in the compartment above it

We also can clearly see 4 x LCAC

Only part I would question is the 6 x Z8, no question it can mange more Z8 but how many in the hanger??? I believe there is room for 4 x Z8, now if they fold the tail and get ride of the nose cone and push it tight they could they manage 6 x Z8?? I'm skeptical but I guess this is another statement I would like confirmed

The Z8 has a folding tail. I wonder if that gives them enough clearance to store them sideways.

That is the only way I can see 6 Z8s fitting in the hanger.

This is quite interesting.

It says that it has 156 sailors with 23 officers. That seems to be really tiny considering they have almost half that many sailors on a Type 056.

4 diesel engines for propulsion. 210 m long, 28 m wide and displacement of 19,855 ton. (max displacement of 29,450 ton from deep flooding/submerging???) Cruising speed of 18 knots and max speed of 25 knots.

It says can carry 6 Z-8 helicopters and 4 Type 726 hovercraft. Can carry at most 65 amphibious assault vehicles!

helicopters can be used from 200 km out, hovercrafts can be launched from 60 km out and AAVs can be launched from 20 km out.

Yeah, a nearly 30k ton max displacement is a bit eyebrow raising. I suspect that is max displacement + flooding of all the ballasts or something? Or maybe they are using different units of tons... Either way, 071s are a class of heavy ships, with a lot of internal volume.

It's quite a remarkably open plaque though.

I came across this picture showing the loading of IFV into the one of the frontal compartments

I wonder if they are driving into the upper of lower compartment??

also let's say they have 4 x LCAC in the well deck and all of them are launched and them they travel back to the Type 071 LPD and go back inside the well deck to load again for a second wave to drop more IFV they could drive from the frontal compartments down the ramp into the well deck and onto the Type 726 LCAC, and since the LCAC are drive through the IFV could drove up and down the ramps of the LCAC until all of the LCAC are loaded again

Isn't that cool? Say there is 3 x IFV on each LCAC that's 12 x IFV in a single wave then they can reload another 12 IFV from the frontal compartments to start a second wave of another 12 x IFV

I really think PLAN should practice this kind of launch, reload and launch again type excercises for training and sharpening up the skills for amphibious training no good just sailing the LPD around it's such a versatile vessel and can do much much better

Williamhou today you provided what I have not seen before a almost full length shot from the inside of the Type 071 hanger!!! Wow and thanks so much hope you enjoyed your time

Did you get to go inside the well deck??? Also can anyone board the ships?! Did you need to have permission or security clearance??

Again nice shots and I already had this confirmed but clearly we can see that 4 x Z-8 sized helos can easily fit inside that hanger!!' :)

Did you get any shots of living quarters???

Glad you liked it :)

I would like to see the well deck, but it was not open for visitors. Yes anyone can board the ship, and they are still open for the next 2 days if you wish! There was no security clearance of any kind, and the officers are very transparent to questions and friendly to all.

These marines were there holding a (explosives?) scanner near the entrance of the 071, but they did not scan a single person lol.
And on the 054A, they did not even bother carrying a scanner.

I took a picture of the canteen of 054A, it's in the 054A thread. I think it's similar for the 071. I also saw the conference room and officer's sleeping area, no photos, but they look comfortable (and not interesting lol).

All of these are GREAT pics William! Thanks so much for sharing. Very good report and much appreciated by all!

My pleasure :)

I wonder how often do you see this kind of "PLAN open day", do they open every ship to everyone on previous visits to other countries? They were fairly open, helpful and friendly - even more so than the Royal Navy when I visited HMS Illustrious before its decommissioning. Impressive.

It seems the public have no chance of boarding/visiting these ships in China, but it is much easier if you are in other countries lol.
