You want rumors?
" HD will build 054A、056/A、815A、903、071A and LHD in 2014.":D

Those are rumours, let's keep it down. I'm under the opinion that at least 2 of these won't happen.

Let's focus on Type 071 here.

Nothing about beginning 001A this year?!

If i may ask a neophite question, 815A is an ELINT ship (improved Dongdiao?), while 903 will be a big oiler/replenishment ship right? Any info as to the type number for the LHD (i saw 075 mentioned), and displacement (again, rumours seems to point to over 30,000t) ? Thanks.

LHD -----as the rumours said. The displacement was cut down from 48,000t to 35000t.will carry 26~28 helos. and 001A is not the HD food. He can't build it. then the displacement of the 071A will not change much.that's all.

Yes. 851 ex Dong Diao 232 is Type 815, 853 is 815G (might be 815A).

The expectation is that the next replenishment ships will be 40,000 tons, so if 903, then perhaps 903B (889 and 890 are 903A).

Well this is a good point because if 889 and 890 are Type 903A then how do they differ from the first two Type 903? Hard to see any structural changes maybe they have modified inside, I am sure the anti-piracy missions did force some modifications

I thought it would be good to do a comparison of the PLAN Type 071 Yuzhao Class LPD and the US Navy San Antonio Class LPDs. The two are remarkably similar in appearance and in function.

Sometimes there is discussion about the displacement of the Type 071 LPD. I have seen figures from 20,000 tons up to 28,000 tons and more.

I believe the accurate number is somewhere in the middle, and probably a bit less than the middle.

Here's why.

We know that the US Navy San Antonio Class LPD displaces 24,900 tons full load. Here are the specifications of the San Antonio Class:

Displacement: 24,900 tons (full load)
Length: 684 feet
Beam: 105 feet
Draft: 23 feet
Well Deck:
1 x LCAC
2 x LCU

The PLAN Type 017 Yuzhao Class LPD is five feet longer than the San Antonio Class, but it is also 12 feet more narrow at the beam. We also know that the well deck on the Type 071 LPD is substantially longer than the San Antonio Class, allowing for four complete LCACs to be held there, where the San Antonio Class only allows for one LCAC and a couple of LCUs. This represents a lot more open space in the Type 071, and therefore less displacement...but also more LCAC capacity.

Displacement: 23,400 tons (full load)
Length: 689 feet
Beam: 93 feet
Draft: 23 feet
Well Deck:
- 4 x LCAC
- 2 x LCU (On davits up in the main deck house)

So, I believe that the PLAN Type 071 Yuzhao Class LPD is over 23,000 tons in displacement, probably more on the order of 23,400 tons, as a result of the narrower beam along its length, and the larger well deck, which weighs less than the additional vehicle storage space that exists on the US Navy San Antonio Class LPD.

Thanks for your replies Youngtomous and Franco-russe.

This part here...
LHD -----as the rumours said.
...should it be taken that indeed the project number is 075 as rumoured?

Any idea how many 071As they plan to build in the coming years, perhaps another 3? Thanks again.

As I said, let's keep down with the rumours until we get more solid information. There are simply too many rumours on Chinese bbs. Even from good sources.

People's Daily Online said:
The PLAN has been patrolling the Xisha and Nansha islands in the South China Sea on an ongoing training mission over the last week.

Warships and helicopters of the People's Liberation Army navy patrolled reefs off the Nansha Islands, which are comprised of more than 500 islets, shoals and reefs, and surrounding waters, from Thursday to Saturday.

Ships from the PLA navy's South Sea Fleet, including the amphibian landing craft Changbaishan, LPD-989, and the missile destroyers Haikou, DDG-171, and Wuhan, DDG-169, set sail from ports in Guangdong and Hainan provinces on Monday.

The group conducted patrols off the Xisha Islands, including Yongxing, Dongdao, Chenhang and Zhongjian, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Marines, backed up by helicopters, on board the Changbaishan conducted landing drills and counter-landing defense measures with garrisons stationed on the islands.

The missile destroyers Haikou and Wuhan also conducted anti-submarine operations.

The ships will continue to sail south and practice tactical maneuvers in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
