Turning a Type-056 into a Type-056A variant with ASW capability should mean

1. Adding a Variable Depth Sonar
2. Adding a Towed Array Sonar
3. Adding some electronics to manage this
4. Potentially adding a sonar dome?

This would take far less time than building new Type-056A corvettes

As far as I know, they've already got at least two 056-derived cutters for years. I don't know why it didn't go into mass production. Maybe PLAN have promised to transfer the original 056s long before.

Have we actually seen more Type-056A corvettes under construction?
If not, perhaps the 20 Type-056s are simply being replaced by the 20 new Type-054A Frigates mooted for 2021-2025?

I've always thought that an "efficient and effective" ASW/convoy group within the 1st Island Chain would look something like 3-4 ships, to include at least 1 Type-054A Frigate (with a helicopter and medium-range air defence) with the remaining ships as Type-056A ASW Corvettes

That would mean the Chinese Navy currently has way too many Corvettes, and they actually need an extra 30+ Frigates to balance out the existing force structure for 72 Corvettes. I reckon the existing Frigates are fully committed to screening Chinese Destroyers/Cruisers/Carriers

Agree. I don't see CCG really needs 20 056s. They could be more useful for PLAN, with ASW upgrades of course.

Maybe CCG wants to retire the older ships transfered from PLAN. I can imagine how painful it could be to operate those vintage ships.

Come on. With PLAN expanding so fast, that shouldn't be the decisive factor here.

Is CCG really overwhelmed? Right now no, but CCG is definitely taking into account of USCG's possible intervention in the West Pacific. (And with the Philippine's next election going on, the possibility of another US-aligned Philippine regime is not to be taken lightly) US is also giving away some of its old CG ships to countries that have maritime territorial disputes with China. JCG is ramping up its construction as well. CCG also needs more militarized ships since it's now under PAP administration. (the "gendarmerie" operational nature of PAP) Two directions mainly concerned the CCG: the East China Sea and the South China Sea. Both areas are plagued with known regional strategic competitors.
