This is probably the best view of the concentric canister launcher yet. You can clearly see both the inner tube (containing the missile) and the outer tube used for venting exhaust gas:

That gas would be black or gray. The gas isn't combusting therefor no flame.I think hot launch means that the missile's motor is running as it is propelled from the VLS tube. This seems like some sort of gas that's been ignited to propel the missile out of the tube. The motor doesn't engage until the missile has cleared the ship.
