It's long been rumored that China has been developing the next-generation anti-ship missile, YJ-21, although it's not clear whether YJ-21 is ballistic or hypersonic.

Below is a screen capture from a presentation some years ago by Rear Admiral Zhao Dengping, former deputy director of Bureau of Naval Equipment, in which he talked about future development of PLAN anti-ship missiles. The first bullet is hypersonic anti-ship missile, the second anti-ship ballistic missile.

Why develop a new ASBM though? Isn't the YJ-18 already really good? Could it be a hypersonic interceptor instead?
It isn't "good" or "bad".
ASBMs, hypersonic, supersonic, and subsonic ASCMs, - all of them have very different qualities as weapons, and for rich militaries, at least several types from this list are worth it.
It isn't just about faster=better.

The article was decent until the end:

and we have the real emergence of a global power."

It's a bit too far-fetched to connect with the recent agreement with the Solomon Islands, or the "naval base."
