Why would they put the CIWS on the same level as the main gun? Doesn't that block the front 20 degrees of the CIWS' field of fire?

They didn't. You could clearly see that the CIWS is elevated. If it's on the deck level you would not be able to see it at all in the picture taken from that angle.

keep in mind the vls system on 055 and new cruiser is larger than any western vls. weight wise and volume wise, even 112 cells would be fairly more than any western ship has.

The model looks like 64 VLS cells forward and 48 VLS cells aft, or at toal of 112 cells. Which is what we have heard to date for the Type 055.

That makes sense.

A random thought: what if there are more, smaller sized (the 3 and 5 meter depth cells) VLS installed on the portside and starboard side of the exhaust funnels to carry smaller weapons like the SAM version of the PL-12/15 and what have you.

That could explain the low CIWS count (also if they decide to install lasers and railguns after 2020, especially for that rumored 55+ with IEP).
