If the current 8 are 055, then the next 8+ if they are 055A might include ABM capabilities or very unlikely, an enlarged VLS cells maybe up to 122
Another least unlikely option, a new power plant for future systems like a rail main gun or laser. I think that's down the line for 055B or new kind of vessel.

What I think PLAN should do is a new medium size DDG to replace 052D. Something with 80-90 VLS cells with ABM capabilities while they keep 055 line going with some modification.
Actually, the most anticipated upgrade is a new power plant, IEPS. The rest, more cells and rail gun are possible but less likely.

We have had a lot of reports of larger gas turbines and electric conversion units. So I guess that would be it.
Personally I think they should just build more of them. The IEPS won't make much of a difference with current weapons systems.
Anything which cut construction cost would be a boon though.

If there are ships which need upgrades they would be the Type 054 and 052 not this ship.

Lasers will make it onboard earlier than the railgun I think. Power requirement is lower and they’ve been testing similar systems for a lot longer. My prediction is:
1) Type-055A: lEPS with Laser CIWS used in conjunction with traditional CIWS (monster CIWS gun recently disclosed?). Supports Antiship ballistic missiles/ballistic missile interception/ASAT capabilities.
2) Type-055B: IEPS with multilayered missile defense system outlined by Ma Weiming in 2017. Rail launched missiles, long range air defense rail gun, and laser CIWS cover fleet air defense at long, medium, and short range, respectively. Main railgun will be multi role, capable of engaging aerial, naval, and land based targets.

When do you think it would happen?

Considering that there are a total of 16 baseline Type 055 planned, I don’t see construction for Type-055A starting till mid 2020s and Type-055B in early 2030s. However, it is possible for them to upgrade some of the baseline Type-055s to Type-055A standards later down the road.
Possible, but the PLAN’s MLU record of older ships doesn’t hold a candle to their new build prowess. I mean how many years did it take for them to upgrade the Sovs? And the first 054s are still languishing with less capable AAW than 056s!

Granted none of them are anything remotely as high status as 055s, but I would not expect any major MLUs on existing hulls for a good many years or even a decade or two.
