What are you talking about? Those kind of knots are no older than 50 years. Don't trust most common knowledge about China. Great Majority of what people believe to be ancient Chinese tradition are simply false, many weren't even older than the PRC.
Starting with food, most Chinese dishes that Chinese (or foreign) people are familiar with aren't older than 100 to 150 years.

Qing dynasty navy sailors NEVER wore those so called "Manchu Hat", only high ranking Imperial Qing court officials or people of peerage got to wear head dress with the top jewel and the feathered tail (顶戴花翎), that's only a tiny tiny fraction of the population of the Qing Empire. Sailors of the Qing navy looks like these:



later on, they got attire reforms, and this is what they look like when visiting Japan couple of years before the Sino-Japanese Naval War (甲午海战）:

Qing dynasty navy sailors NEVER wore those so called "Manchu Hat", only high ranking Imperial Qing court officials or people of peerage got to wear head dress with the top jewel and the feathered tail (顶戴花翎), that's only a tiny tiny fraction of the population of the Qing Empire. Sailors of the Qing navy looks like these:

The late Qing naval officers and sailors look professional and modern and sharp. Sad knowing a lot of these men will be at the bottom of the Yellow Sea just a few years after these photographs were taken.
