I think perhaps the most important takeaway from that earlier CCTV video was not that it revealed the number of VLS on the 055, rather it was the improvement in welding processes.
Some key points from the video:
- R & D people developed a new system for managing welding
- Presets of welding gun configurations (such as voltage, current, duration, etc.) were pre-tested and saved in a database
- When welders come on site and swipe their cards the system will allocate them to a particular welding station and from there these presets would be sent to his welding gun to ensure every weld follows pre-determined configurations
- These changes were able to make sure the 055's surface is much smoother than before and the welds are much more uniform and quality is much improved.
The chief inspector of 055's construction mentioned in the video commented that
"the 055 as a class of warship is on par with world leading standards (for such ships), and its construction process and methodology is beyond world leading standards"
In China, 'world leading standards' basically refers to US capabilities.
