The US is using a 155mm gun on one class of vessel, and there are only three of those ships being built, so there will only be six such guns. They are expensive, but they will work very well shooting PGMs a long ways and directly for support of troops on land. They will be very accurate and have a very high rate of fire, being able to shoot many rounds from different angles and elevations depending on weather conditions so they all rain down on the targets at once.

I think the AGS may yet see production yet. There is a smaller size AGS BAE has proposed to fit onboard burkes to replace Mk 45s. It has slightly reduced performance such as rate of fire, but uses the same LRALM munition.

That is what they are designed for. Anti-shipping duties are possible with these weapons, but with the 80 PVLS cells and the Tactical Tomahawks for anti-shipping duties, there use for that mission will probably be very limited.

The USN is also developing the impressive LRASM-A, a stealthy long range AShM. A shame the USN gave up on LRASM-B, which would've provided a supersonic AShM like brahmos and YJ-12.

As long as 052D still in full production run, the 055 is nothing more than a myth.

However, if 052D's weapon suite will be what eventually field by a successor design of larger hull and tonnage, then 052D's role will be as much as an improvement but as a lead-in design.

Well rumours are saying we'll see 055 start production sometime late this year, so we might see a sign of it soon.

There's certainly no reason why 052D and 055 can't be produced simultaneously, and the rumours of a Dalian production line would support this notion... if/when it happens.


But this entire thread is meant to be speculation and rumours until we see the modules pop up at JNCX.


Also, 052D doesn't have to be a "lead in design" just because it'll be pioneering hardware later ships will use. Ticonderoga was the first ship class to pioneer aegis and the Mk 41 VLS, yet it was a class in among itself.

055 may be produced soon but most likely like the 052c when it first appeared only one or two at most will be built and trialed for couple of years while the 052c and maybe D is comfortable enough to be mass produced - like what we saw before with the 054A being produced in numbers. So in the next few years backbone of the the PLAN's modern destroyer force will be the 051 and 52s

The serial production of the type 56 and 54a have pointed towards a change in china's naval industry. There is no longer a need for prototype and technology demonstrators to be deployed by ship variants, rather test ships have been manufactured to take place of those facilities.

When a type 55 comes out, it will be the real deal.
Speaking of which. All new variants of PLAN manufactured ships are even numbered. *forget about the 51c, that was pre-2006*, y is the 55, the 55. Would it not be the 50? *being that the 56 is the cor, 54 the frig, 52 the des, and 50 the crus*

He has been a very close follower of the Chinese military and somehow has documents relating to weapons systems never heard of before. His predictions are scarily accurate and as far as "track record" goes, his information seems to be a lot more accurate than HuiTong. Some of his "predictions" are the 48000 ton LHD, HQ-8, HQ-26, solid state laser, etc.

He asserted that the 055 will be in construction in 2013 before anyone else did, and he apparently also got these rumors:
- Type 055 will have QC280
- Type 055 will be 12000 tons
- It will have the Type 1130 CIWS
- Construction will possibly begin in 2013
- Type 055 will have the PJ38
- It will have superior ECM
- A smaller complement
- Same radar as 052D

The serial production of the type 56 and 54A have pointed towards a change in china's naval industry. There is no longer a need for prototype and technology demonstrators to be deployed by ship variants, rather test ships have been manufactured to take place of those facilities.

IMO the 056 and 054A both had precedents. Compare the 056 to Pattani-class OPV and 054A to... 054.

What has changed is that the Chinese Navy appears confident enough in domestic technology to ditch the "dual track" programs of the past. i.e. 051C vs 052C.

I find it hard to believe that china will make the jump from 052D (about 7500t) to type 055 (12000t). I believe that type 055 (or whatever the name is) is coming but i dont think that it will have that much displacement. It maybe possible, i dont know what sources Henri K has inside PLA (if he has any), and what he says could be true. But i find it hard to believe.
