The roof for 055#1 was removed. Very low res shot, but one can still see it.

Guess that rumors are true and the launch is imminent.

Pardon, but where exactly is #1?

2 x Type 055 under construction at JNCX

2 x Type 055 under construction at Dalian

That is 4 very big ticket items on the go

Question is can we see any modules at JNCX for a 5th unit or is this a 4 unit order for now ? Because the 1st CG is ready for launch anytime

My feeling is these 4 will be commissioned then we could see improved Type 055A order signed

Two 055s under construction in Dalian in the basin, and two 052Ds outfitting in the water in the background. It also appears they are building a wall in the middle of the basin to separate the 055 area with the inner sections. Perhaps they wish to launch the 055s without disrupting the construction of the inner ships. Also, could it be possible that the inside ships are also going to be 055s thus bringing the eventual number of concurrent 055s under construction up to 6?

Not impossible, but it would be surprising.
I thought one reason that might make it unlikely is that if they want to have concurrent four 055s constructed in the same DL drydock continuously, then after the first pair of DL 055s are launched they would have to move the second pair of DL 055s into the position where the current first two are, and then build the third pair of DL 055s in their place.
That would be contingent on whether they would be able to move incomplete hulls between locations in the same drydock... but thinking about it, it should be perfectly possible and should be fairly routine for shipyards to do.

But again, I'd be very impressed and surprised if they manage to build four 055s in the same drydock with six concurrent, it would almost be a little bit of overkill in terms of pace.

.... that said, the latest satellite photos from a month ago of that drydock does seem to definitively point to a fairly solid wall separating the drydock in two halves of equal length... who knows, maybe they really will try building four 055s in the same drydock. or they might be building something else (maybe non-military) in the other half, or they might just use the other half as another staging area for modules before assembly.

edit, i suspect the photo that jobjed posted of the drydock taken from a position on the ground, likely was taken in late April, going by satellite images, as we can see both of the two cosco tankers there in similar positions... whereas the latest photo take in May shows only a single tanker there left, with the wall in a more complete position and of course both 055s showing more progressed construction

(left photo taken 26 April, right photo taken 16 May)
