If the next gen FFG is confirmed to use the designation 054B as opposed to 057, would that indicate hull and propulsion are unchanged? In other words, no IEPS and same general size and top speed?

Could indicate that its all diesels driving the generators.

Of course. Most main propulsion diesels, such as the one on the 054/054A, are built indigenously under license from Pielstick. Diesel generators are usually licensed from MTU. Older ships could use indigenously designed diesels, such as the main propulsion engine of the 053H3.

All the time for the commercial ships. On the Type 054A, the first four had engines that were either imported or licensed from Pielstik, but from the fifth it is said that they went to a domestic design and make.
It‘s the 16PA6B-STC made by Shaanxi Diesel. Still licensed from Pielstick, but it's tricky: Shaanxi Diesel had to boost the output of the original engines significantly, but the French hesitated to transfer the turbo charging tech to Shaanxi Diesel. So Shaanxi Diesel designed their own. Initially only about 73% of the parts were domestically made, but nowadays this ratio has been increased to greater than 99%.

So its practically Chinese made with licensed patents. I don't think Pielstick is still around as a company and may have been absorbed by another, the same fate fallen on MTU.

Since it’s possible it’s being built right now, how long until we see first pictures of it? 1 year?

Given that Hudong Zhonghua is the lead shipyard for the Type 054A, chances are it will be the lead shipyard for the 054B. If there are any Type 054A modules still left with HDZ as the steel for the 054B has begun cutting, these will still be finished until all the modules are consumed. But at this point, they would have stopped building new 054A modules.

Guandong Huangpu will take a bit more time before its validation to build 054B.

I believe both shipyards have kits for four frigates --- two 054A/P and two 054A for HDZ and four 054A for GH. I expect one more Type 054A to come out from HDZ along with the final 054A/P, and three more 054A from GH, aside from those already launched. This before we begin to see any physical signs of 054B in the docks. I guess next year.

I also expect the sale of the HDZ facilities at the Huangpu River to be indefinitely postponed for this project. Future 075/076 will have to be made in the Changxing facility.
