Great find. Not to be unexpected as the land based HQ-16B has changed to a new dual array radar.
It is possible that the guidance arrays can be used for searching as well, then It will be X+C+S ,having said that,a X-band radar fixed this low doesn’t make much sense ,I’m just not happy with this “long live the type-382”thing.

There are probably search functions also on the Type 347/349 gunnery radar (X-band) and the Type 364 radar (C-band) that was also retained.

I think the older radars also search and track targets. Even those are not one way illumination devices.

I think this array is the lower small panel on this, minus the large search radar component.

These new arrays look like they are fixed. But are they indeed?

I need to get better pictures. There is probably a new seeker head, and therefore a new HHQ-16 variant for this.

Instead of going with a naval variant of this radar, they might have decided to only use the target illuminator, which is the lower panel of this radar.

The RN on the other hand defines ships by purpose. Frigate is ASW vessel
The only correction is that frigate is an ASW/general purpose ship.

Much like in most countries around the world(with exception of size, ofc), with the notable exception of US and Russian navies.

UK certainly does not follow the NATO classification, despite what you say. Type 26 frigate has a displacement that rivals the Type 052D and the Type 45. Also during their Cold War periods, both the Type 22 and 23 frigates exceeds or matches the displacement of the Type 42 destroyer.
Is there a consistent NATO classification?

Its also an old scheme from before the time when multipurpose roles were assumed by smaller combatants which then in response started to take on weight and size. So as said, this scheme is definitely not helpful nowadays, it was applicable at the very latest during the late Cold War.
