It appears that PN has a well thought out plan to evolve and build out for the future.
- In 2006, Pakistan ordered four F-22P (an upgraded variant of the Type 053H3) for $750 million US.
- In 2012, the PN inducted its first of four Azmat-class fast attack craft (FAC) ordered from China Shipbuilding and Offshore Company Limited (CSOC) for reportedly $50 million US per ship.
- In 2015, Pakistan inked its largest single big-ticket purchase from China to-date in the form of eight new air-independent propulsion (AIP)-equipped submarines (SSP).
- In 2017 and 2018, the PN has committed to four Type 054A frigates.
Given its defense budget limit, this is pretty strong commitment to its navy by Pakistan. It's a also very smart procurement strategy -- all these platforms are very mature ones and have been mass produced by China for PLAN. PN gets very good prices for them.
I wonder what's next after the 054A acquisition - are 4 052D's in store? Let's say if PN aims for them in the next five years, it would significantly raise PN's profile in the region and make PN a very respectable navy.
