When are we going to see a few decommissionings of old ships ?

The two Type 054?

Rest not soon, they should heavily upgrade the old with towed sonar, variable depth sonar, better bow sonar and torpedo defences

Use them for heavy anti submarine screening

Big ticket items like LPD, LHD and carriers need them

Type 055 behemoth can't be everywhere at the same time

But by far the biggest nighmare to submarines is a anti submarine helicopter and Z9C is a bit light in that aspect if they can fit a Z15 on Type 054A that would be awesome

Henry K is saying that the 6 "destroyer flottilas" that contained 4 destroyers and 4 frigates each will grow to 6 destroyers and 6 frigates each. So instead of having 24 frigates in these flottilas they would have 36 frigates in them (currently there are also about 24 older frigates in other units).

If this is correct the PLAN still has quite a lot of "slots" to fill in these flottilas with new frigates and the only frigates being decommissioned would be older 053s in these other units being replaced by 056s.

China's ASW will improve with the new Z-20 ASW platform. I don't know if they will fit the Type 054A's hangar. We don't know what the current status is of the Z-20 program so it will be a couple years before we can see the Z-20 at sea.

If that's the case then the PLAN combat ship fleet will have to grow by 1/3. That's quite and increase. I don't know if this is such a good idea to put so much into the navy and neglecting the land forces. Where most soldiers don't even have bullet proof vests. And where the tank forces still has thousands of obselete models. And it has inadequate medical capacities.

And yes i'm talking about the decommissioning of the Jianghu and the Luda class ships. We haven't seen any decommissionings of those ships in 2017 and only one last year.

鱼8 Looks like this? The front doesn't look like a torpedo

It is the canister that hold the actual torpedo as this picture show how the torpedo is deployed. The actual torpedo is inside the canister. The good news is they finally confirm the existence of YU8

Here some more picture
he Chinese navy finally reveals its missile ASW vertical launch Yu-8, fired from a frigate Type 054A, after 10 years in endowment.

China can handle any of the conceivable military challenges on land (Russia, Korea, Vietnam, India). And if we're taking about producing bullet proof vests, it probably would take a month for the manufacturing base to equip the entire frontline army with bullet proof vests, if need be.

But growing the naval fleet by a third is an undertaking that takes years.

And remember the end size of the Chinese Navy will likely be comparable to the US Navy.

Totally agree a vest is nothing they might already have it in the storage and nobody is going to invade China it is just crazy idea So it is correct to allocate larger share of defense budget to Navy and airforce
It took them 9 years of concerted effort to built 25 ships Even with the best effort it still take ages to build strong navy.
A paean and tribute to type 54 the work horse of Chinese navy
