I just hope they get some sense to make an additional variant of new VLS, with just 4 cells per module, with those 4 cells in one row. That way one could put 24 such cells inside same VLS space as 054a has, and still have several inches to spare. Part of them would have to be perpendicular to the ship's main axis but I don't see that as a problem.

And if they're really wild with 054b, they could try and remodel the middle part of the superstructure, between the bridge and the funnel, and get one of those 4 cell modules on the edge of the ship's superstructure there. Like the peripheral VLS on Zumwalt. That wouldn't take away much internal space if the modules are short, for self defense only. Antiship missiles could even be removed and placed in the front VLS well.

That way the ship could have 8 quadpacked cells for self defense, 4 antiship cells, maybe 4 quadpacked asw rocket torpedo cells and rest (24 cells) could be for hq16.

Actually, I think they may be able to put 32 universal cells amidships in the area currently occupied by the slant launchers by just moving the deckhouse forward. This would also provide an opportunity to place an 1130 into the B position and give the 054B better firing arcs for its self defense weapons.

Chinese Wiki which has proven to be so far a pretty reliable source states the following:-

27 Launched, of which so far 23 have been Commissioned.

I think Russia is more likely to invest in shipyards.

Russia does not lack for small surface combatants the size of 054A or thereabouts. It is the 7-8,000+ ton sized surface combatants that it is lacking and will soon be severely lacking, despite making noise about building the so-called "Lider" class superdestroyer.
