Well, it also appears that the 18th 054A no 576 'Daqing' was also commissioned on the same day as boat no 577.........for some reason the news of this event was somewhat quieter, in the Chinese news, only appearing in the PLA Daily......but a commissioning plaque has appeared in Chinese military forums. Can anyone else confirm this event?

Wow! Two Type 054A commissioned in one day! This is what I'm talking about!

To the mods can you please make all the PLAN platforms threads like the Type 052C/D, Type 054A, Type 056, Type 055 and the submarines into sticky threads in the navy section and throw out some of the older ones that is talking about PLAN strategy in a war with Taiwan.

I think type type 054As have proven to be the most ideal vessels for anti-piracy and patrolling the disputed territories of the South China Sea. However, if you talk about engaging the Aegis destroyers and submarines of the U.S., Japanese, and ROK navies, the PLAN still need the type 052C/D and 055.

They are relatively cheap and have proven themselves as reliable workhorses. They can basically be the Perry class for PLAN. 054B can be something along the lines of just newer sensors and maybe using the standardized VLS system but it's overkill in my opinion to need a completely new design as per many fanboy CGs. The R&D and funding is better spent on developing and building more 055s, carriers, and even the LHD.

my point is that if their main use to PLAN is anti-piracy and patroling SCS (which we haven't seen them doing by the way), why would we need over 20 of them?
