IMHO, this article needlessly interjects political motives and intrigue into a story where none really exists.
Seriously, Professor Ni Lexiong? the PLAN treated a life or death rescue as a "live drill?" Well of course they did Einstein...it wasn't a drill!
The reports also says that the Chinese vessels arrived before Japanese vessels could get there, as if though there was some kind of competition between the two, but then let's us know that the Japanese vessels were actually asked to turn back.
The only race was the one against time. In such scenarios, the crews of the vessels involved in such incidents are focused on saving life, not on chits in a game, or scoring points for politicians or analysts.
A more accurate and non-politicized title could easily have been:
"PLAN vessel rushes to save Chinese crewman on burning Chinese fishing boat as Japanese Coast Guard offers to assist."
Jeff, I agree; there is no competition here and honestly, sailors were saved - which was the important thing.
I think to read inbetween the lines, the important thing is that China is willing to use her naval assets to rescue her fishing boats. the last time which was (I believe) during the great leap forward with the off shore patrol crafts.
Which I think brings a sense of relief and pride to the fisherman, but more so suggests that China is confident of her systems and is wealthy enough to use them.
The other item of interest is that it shows that the PLAN are indeed patrolling the seas around china unlike the Russians whom are generally in port; - Old news, but still a reaffirmation.
