Rather than transfer to coast guard, the first two Sovs would be more suitable for transformation into pure naval fire support vessel like Jianghu 516. 2x2 auto 130mm guns, stripped of SAM, loading with as many MRLs as it'll fit, maybe some CM-501g 70km NLOS missile launchers. Imagine the fun one can have.

they definitely don't have that many jianghu in service and all of them will be retired soon. But, PLAN is definitely not ready to transfer Sov to coast guard in the near future. The first two Sovs will probably retire at around the same type as Type 052.

My information is that there are still 3 Jianghu I, 6 Jianghu II, 1 Jianghu III and 6 Jianghu V in service that makes a total of 16.

From my own checks......you are correct.......16 are still in active front line service!

i dont think the 6 Jianghu V's will be retired anytime soon.

If the Sovremenny-class destroyers are the odd man out because of its Russian systems and questionable integration/compatibility with Chinese systems, there is no restriction on China refitting them with Chinese made systems in the future. On ships like the 052B and 051C ships, I'd assume the Russian weapons are somehow integrated with Chinese systems?

For the role the Jianghu V's play, retirement is no where on the horizon. Aside from a non-stealthy hull, it performs just fine patrolling the SCS. If anything, arming them with a FL-3000 in place of the stern gun would immediately boost their capabilities. :D

Exactly............there are plenty of ships in older versions of this class of ship, to be disposed first of anyway!

I would not say there are plenty of older JIANGHU’s. As I recently mentioned, the only JIANGHU I’s in service is 516 serving at Ningde as fire support ship and 519 at Huludao as test ship.

Then there are the six remaining JIANGHU II 533, 534, 543, 545, 553 and 555, 557 at Yulin, adapted to the role of South China Sea patrol frigates, JIANGHU III 537 remaining after the sale of her two sisters to Bangladesh, and JIANGHU IV 544 at Lushun serving as Naval Academy training ship.

The JIANGHU I/II’s at Lushun have been replaced by JIANGWEI II 564 and 565, those at Shanghai-Wusong by JIANGWEI I 539-542 , and those at Ningde by JIANGHU V 558, 559 and JIANGWEI II 566, 567.

I take what you said about 516 and 519. But what about 517, 518 and 551 are they all decommissioned now ? And if so when did that happen ?

I was completely off!
I made that comment without going home to look at my orbat, it's about 13 in service from II to IV, whereas the status of Jianghu I is a little unclear. 551 retired last year regardless of what wikipedia might say. The status of 517 and 518 are unknown at the moment. They should be retiring very soon if they haven't already because that flotilla has 558, 559, 566 and 567 at the moment.

551 and 552 were broken up at Zhanjiang in October 2012.

The situation concerning those of 3 Frigate Squadron Ningde is a bit murky, since no official statements about decommissioning have ben made. But since the replacements have been arriving since last autumn, starting with 558 and 559 from Zhanjiang in December 2012, it seems reasonable to assume they are gone.

In particular, it stands to reason that 518 JI’AN has retired, since the name has been given to 056 586.
