A Growing Family!
According to a sign board put up for the Hong Kong visitors on board the ship, the 054A VLS appearantly is capable of lauching ASROC-like rockect assisted ASW torpedoes. If true, that adds significant ASW capability to this platform!
Such a capability has been rumoured for a while (see 054A entry on sinodefence) but this would be nice confirmation to hammer in the last nail.
Of course hopefully it isn't mistranslation referring to the ASW rocket launchers at the front of the ship...
This is a great addition to the Type 054A.You mean this sign board?

Does anyone know the specs for this...ie. Range of the missle, type of torpedo, range and speed of the torpedo. i
It would be nice to compare the capability against the US vertical launch ASROC. The VL-ASROC has the following published specifications:
RUM-139 VL-ASROC:
Propulsion: 2 Stgae solid propellant Rocket Engine
Range: 22 Kilometers (14 miles)
Torpedo: MK-54 Light Weight Torpedo
Torpedo Range: 11 kilometers (7 miles)
Torpedo Speed: 40+ Knots (46+ MPH or 75+ kph)
This means the maximum range for launching and hitting an enemy sub with this weapon is 21 miles, or 33 kilometers). A good distance, but not nearly as much as the canceled the US Navy was planning, which was 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) with a missile speed of mach 1.5 and carrying the MK-50 torpedo or a small nuclear warhead.
Buat, as regards the in-service VL-ASROC, if we could see on of these pictures of the launching of the VLS PLAN toprpedo. This is the launch of a US VL-ASROC:
Well, at least officially PLAN claimed they do...
