So the Indonesians are still looking for a CODAD ship? No wonder they were interested in those Russian corvettes.

Chinese gears are known to have cheaper spare parts. China is open to have technology transfer and personnel training at super cheap price. Ammunition is also cheaper. Superior loan offers. I would not be surprised if 052E ends up cheaper both initial cost and operating cost.

And the most important thing, there will be no string attached, unlike buying from the US or EU

Two extremely different ships(and which of FREMMs anyways?). Yes - the size is similar, and that's it.
p.s. long-term operating cost is one of the largest issues in ship procurement.

The more apt analogy would be unable to afford Honda Civic and buys BYD Han instead. For little more the capability gap is huge.

Lastly 052E tonnage is not far from these oversized 'frigate'. 052C is roughly equal.

Which model of the honda civic? The BYD Han is both more expensive and more capable than the civic. Buying the BYD Dolphin would be a cheaper choice, and still better than the civic.

Indonesia has a lot of ambitions. If they want to buy second hand 052C or 052D, offer a great deal with them. I totally see a need for Indonesia to getting a real navy given their low coast line and expanding economic influence. Getting Indonesia on China's side would be a big deal.
