Do the APAR plates seem larger and of a different shape to anyone else or is it just me.

yes I know they are just temp coverings, but they seem different from the previous builds.

Only covers. Even without the covers, the arrays would still be the same shape and size as the previous 052D.

The biggest change already has occurred in the past and that's without change of the shape and size. That's the change between the arrays that have the external calibration booms to the ones without. This points to a different inbuilt calibration method and might mean changes to the elements themselves. The clean APARs could have a different and upgraded T/R module from the previous. Further upgrades to the modules can be made but all these are nondetectable externally.

The best part is we can see the evolution of the 052D as from the 4 ships in this photo.

119 still has external calibration booms for the Type 346 APAR and "fishbone" rotating radar.

120 & 121 don't have the external calibration booms anymore, but still have the "fishbone" rotating radar.

Last ship (number covered) don't have the external calibration booms and replaced "fishbone" rotating radar with the "fly swatter" rotating radar.

There's also been an upgrade to the CIWS gun, from Type 730 (seven barrels) to Type 1130 (11 barrels).

Oh right, I forgot about that as well. That makes for a beautiful evolution timeline from 119 to ???

Changes underlined below:

119: external calibration booms, Type 730, "Fishbone"
120: No external calibration booms, Type 730, "Fishbone"
121: No external calibration booms, Type 1130, "Fishbone"
???: No external calibration booms, Type 1130, "Fly Swatter"
