Not directly related to the discussion, just a small snippet on warships from the WW1-WW2 era.
Agree with
@Gloire_bb here. The 055s (or 055E) won't be capital ships for the PLAN. In the PLAN, that title belongs to the carriers.
Hood was the best battlecruiser in UK and no newer class is planned.
Nope.
After Hood, there are actually more advanced battlecruiser designs being worked on by the Royal Navy that were meant to succeed the Admiral-class, especially with the incorporation of lessons from Jutland in mind. One of the most prominent designs is the G3-class:
The G3-class battlecruiser (named HMS Duncan in-game) from World of Warships for illustration purposes.
Armed with 9x 406mm main guns in 3 three-gun turrets, better protection system through rather unconventional turret, superstructure and propulsion system arrangements, plus a thicker deck armor than the Hood, the G3 would have been an even better battlecruiser than the Hood (or, perhaps the first REAL fast battleship) had it not been cancelled by the 1920 Washington Naval Treaty.
I think in this analogy 055 would be King George V class. People already knew by then that Hood is no longer state of art due to poor protection and future is fast battleship.
King Geoge V-class is pretty much a battleship that is handicapped by the 1936 London Naval Treaty. Had the Admiralty went the same way as the Americans with the 381mm or even 406mm calibres for their main guns in three-gun turrets instead of the 356mm guns in four-gun turrets with unsatisfactory performances, the class would have performed better in engagements against the Bismarck and Scharnhorst.
I won't call the King George Vs the best for said analogy, but at least the Brits managed to make do with what the treaty limitations had provided.
