Last year, pop3 did mention that the next-generation destroyers are already in the works. There has been no known designation for the new class of destroyers for now, so the 052E is just a placeholder.

There is a famous saying that goes "过于先进，不便展示；过于落后，可以展示" (too advanced, thus not possible to exhibit; already falling behind, thus can be exhibited). I suppose that's true in this case - After nearly a decade, the PLAN has pretty much done playing around with the 052D/DL, so they want something newer and much better.

How soon will the first ship be commissioned you think? 10 years from today?

Well, I don't know how long it has been in development. For all I know, the design is not even finalized, so I took the most pessimistic position possible just to be safe. It was a legitimate question, I'm always happy to hear more information.

It's fine, since neither do we know how far the development of the new destroyer class has gone, nor do we know if the new destroyer class has actually started construction or not.

Though, I think it is safe to say that we can see the first units of this new destroyer class appearing before the end of this decade. Perhaps the current batch of 052D/DL is the last batch that would ever be constructed (except if there are any export orders), and the new destroyer class will began construction and entering service from the 15th Five Year Plan (2026-2030) onwards.
