Hmm if the article mentions "independently developed" and propulsion upgrades, could they be implying that they have swapped out the MTU diesels for an entirely indigenous engine?

I think people are reading too much into it.

Improvements in propulsion could simply mean a slightly newer variant of the diesels it uses, or even something as basic as an upgrade to bearings.

But knowing global times, they probably are just throwing random stuff onto the article without actually knowing what it means.

Luyang IV / Type 052E

new radar, new propulsion, and larger displacement.
I don't think Global Security is much of a reliable source...

But yes, I do agree that 052D/DL has pretty much approached the limits of that the present hull design could realistically offer.

However, with the present geopolitial development in the WestPac, China needs every edge she could muster. That means having a navy that fields warships and fleets that can dish out greater effective firepower than her expected enemies.

I believe whichever destroyer design meant to succeed the 052D-class must be equipped with better radar, processing and networking & collaborative systems, more VLS cells, more powerful propulsion and electrical systems, DEWs for self-defences, and greater endurance capabilities for the ship and crew.

Pop3 also mentioned about the designation for the next-generation destroyer been set, so I would assume that the development work is already well underway.

Oh, don't get me started. "Independently developed", "homegrown", etc. That they have to keep emphasizing these things reveals an internalized sense of inferiority. But there are more issues than just that, like calling the Type 052D "China's Type 052D" like people need to be reminded what country the ship belongs to. No, everybody knows the Type 052D and 055 by now and they should just be referred to without any qualifiers.

I've also noticed that CGTN and GT refer to Xi as "Chinese President Xi Jinping" which is another facepalm. He's "President Xi Jinping"; when the proper noun "President" is used by the Chinese press, the country shouldn't be referenced to implicitly elevate his stature. The sentence should be something like "President Xi Jinping met with US leader Joe Biden bla bla bla."

Chinese journalists really have a lot to learn.
I agree with some of your points, but your example isn't a good one. Chinese media often aims to be neutral especially in the realm of international politics. If Xi meets with Biden, or the leader of another country, it would be fair to claim Chinese President Xi Jinping met XXX president XXX, as opposed to leaving out China but only introducing the other country.

And I firmly believe that is just a 055. Alternatively if you get another 052 like ship to replace 052D it might be wider but overall tonnage not change much.

Some sort of award ceremony at CSSC for hard working staff, note the screen behind them with details about this "milestone 184"

  • A vessel called H2616 was launched on 28th of December, launched with fitting out at 80% complete.
  • 1*DQ, 2*D and 5*X26A to start assembly on time on the slipways within the year
  • 4 vessels to begin construction, 2*X26A, the others blocked by judging from width of the text should be something like 2*D
I'm guessing DQ is 055, D is 052D and X26A is 726A LCAC.

With H2616, did we ever confirm a launch of 052D around that time?

This entry in Chinese Wikipedia does seem to support that hull # H2616 is type 052DL.

(As a continuation from the Type 726 LCAC thread)

I did a little editing:

Yep, does look about right.

Though we can never be sure of the numbers, even if the ship class can be guessed.
