052C/052D Class Destroyers

I find it interesting that 156 Qiqihar managed to get commissioned before 121 Qiqihar, which is the last of the non extended Type 052D.

Given the way PLAN does the acceptance trials, which is on their turf now, I wonder if this slowness has more to do with the 10th Destroyer Flotilla. This destroyer squadron has been chided by netizens as "old men fleet" because that's where all the Ludas congregated.

Last May, four of the Type 051 Ludas belonging to this destroyer formation were simultaneously decommissioned.

In February of last year, the formation has its first modern destroyer, the 119 Guiyang, which is the first 052D built from Dalian. Prior to this, the 10th's most modern ships consisted of Type 054A.

Since then the 10th has gotten its second modern destroyer, the 120 Chengdu, which is also from Dalian. Their next destroyer would have been 121 Qiqihar, which is from, as you guess it, from Dalian.

No stretch of the imagination needed that the remaining 052D made in Dalian are likely to go to the 10th. Would be an interesting question if they would get a Dalian made Type 055.

It is a common occurence for ships from dalian to take longer.. The fitting out takes about 3 months longer and sea trials take an extra 5 months on average.

My theory is that the transitioning of the 10th Destroyer Flotilla, whose previous experience on warships are Type 054A and Type 051 Ludas --- really old --- to the 052D has taken so long due to the larger technical gap between the ships they are accustomed to and which they are migrating to. Ships like the last two or three Dalian 052D has been sitting out in the acceptance dock for months before they are accepted. At first I thought it would be Dalian's fault, maybe some QC issues that prevent them from being accepted, but that doesn't explain why the ships just sit in the acceptance dock and not back into the dry docks or refitting areas for repairs.

You have to compare this with the Sixth Destroyer Flotilla, which recently accepted pennant no. 156, which is the first commissioned 052DL. The Sixth has four Type 052C and two 052D previously, had a much longer time with both classes, while the 10th had no advanced destroyer and only acquired two 052D just this year. Those crews from the decommissioned Ludas are probably the ones being transitioned to the 052D, and 051 Luda to 052D is a massive technological leap.

Key point below.

csba.png

In summary:

Reduce the number of large, fully-manned multi-role destroyers and cruisers.
Build large numbers of DDC and MUSVs.

A DDC is basically a destroyer-sized Arsenal Ship (or Missile Carrier) with a minimal crew of 20.

A MUSV is a medium-sized unmanned ship, used for passive and multistatic sensing, counter-ISR, and ASW

---
Of course, we'll have to see if the US Navy ends up following this route.

This is from Chinese wiki which I then run Google Translate over it. Its good to catch up with updates from time to time. Things can still change with the final assignment of future ships.

24 are in water.
Only 1 more is identified and is about 2-3 months from launching from dalian shipyard.
I'm expecting a dual launch with #8 055.
