DDG 174 in St. Petersburg. These were likely taken sometime ago, when PLAN participated in a Russian naval review.

Cirr at the PDF is saying the 16th 052D (3rd of the DLs) has been launched at JN, 12/18/2018?

this satellite photo from the csis piece about jncx shows 052D and DL nicely next to each other, showing that the hangar structures of both seem to be the same length. I don't think we've had any images of 052DL's hangar taken from ground level yet to judge the actual hangar's width.

But I wonder if it's possible that 052D hangars can accommodate the same helicopter folded that 052DL is meant to carry. I presume that to be a Z-20 ASW variant. Having externally similar hangar structures doesn't mean the actual hangars are the same volume of course, but it certainly leaves the possibility open.
That's especially tantalizing because if Z-20 ASW can be accommodated in 052D's hangar it means it should fit in all other hangars of similar dimension as well (052C, 054A, etc) meaning a standardized ASW helicopter fleet for all major surface combatants would be possible.

If that is the 24th Type 052D, what are the final numbers for the Type 052D will be?
They are currently going at the rate of 3 units per year... Unless they find enough new feasible and advantageous technologies to fit onto the ship or completely depart from the current type and hop onto a larger class, we can just keep adding 3 per year... So if a new design is to be implemented by 2020 .. Total 052d orders would be about 30..

Personally i think, instead of a type 052e, PLAN would like a type 055A to replace production of both type 052d and type 055, since the navy budget is only going to rise from now.. They are already building at the rate of 4 destroyers per year ( even when following a not so aggressive schedule) From here on, its much more likely they pay attention to size and quality of a ship rather than quantity..Because the current sustained fleet turnaround is already over 100 ships ( 3-4 ships per year X 30 year ship life). Its only a matter of time before they find the relevant technologies like IEPS in feasibly applicable condition and make the switch..

I also expect 055 series to replace 052 series. According to Chinese designation, they are very clearly DDGs, not CGs or whatever foreign observers say.

There is no reason to assume 055s won’t replace 052s as 052s replaced 051s. That said, 052s would be continuously updated with 055 technology just like older destroyers received 052 technology.

Sure, but two technologies that they'll certainly not get are dual hangars ( the need of which will become distinct once they start operating in continuously contested sub surface areas) and probably ieps ( due to complication of main propulsion overhaul becoming much more of problem than a clean sheet design)

That is interesting. Some say 052D/E series will continue, even displace or replace continuation of the 054A/B series. Others think 052D/E series will be replaced by 055 when the contract is finished, suggesting 054B will be the middle line vessel instead. There are arguments for and against both, but I may just wait and sea. In the meantime it may look like at least 30 of the Type 052D might be built, and this is probably what the contract called for.
