Multiple sources have claimed that a 052E or a significantly-modified 052D has been launched. I'll post some commentary from credible sources.

这里有个小问题，55的装备下放52D，是一次性放，还是多次放，这个本猫无法准确预测。而且55还在画图改55A呢。所以，55的部分已经可以下放的装备，改动图不多的装备是完全可以先下放的。52D和55都如此，后批次肯定是不断进步的。那什么时候是52D改，什了么时候是52E呢。我微博也说了，就看拉出来了，如果是一体化隐身桅杆就可能是52E，如果只是拉长个机库啥就是52D改。

Longer deck? About time

For an 052E to make sense, the most important thing to have imo would be IEPS.

Integrated mast would be nice, but hardly game changing. IEPS would allow the mounting of the new rail gun, which alone would make this class worthwhile.

The 052E with IEPS may even be the first PLAN ship to be operational with a railgun, since the next batch of 055s seems years away, and may not have IEPS to effectively support the power needs of the railgun.

The 052 is a far more mature design, so would be better suited as the first to be fitted with IEPS and railguns instead of the much newer 055.

Once they worked out all the bugs with railguns on 052E/Fs, integrating railguns to the 055 would be much simpler and less risky.
