Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I wonder if the 18th escort task force for anti-piracy will have Type 052D would be great if it did it can deploy small boats so it would be well suited
Probably too soon.

The PLAN just got the vessel and it had only the one Sea Trial by the builder.

I expect for the next 12-18 months the PLAN will be putting it through its paces and building those new systems up to IOC. All of that, IMHO, will happen before they send it on such a mission...and even then, I expect they will be more tasked with the Carriers and LPDs in terms of fleet protection.

They may send one...but I do not believe it will happen until they have fulfilled their current need for escorts to the high value vessels.

Although asif's wishlist has merit. Sending a 052D on a far deployment for 3 months in a low threat mission (pirates) provides great scenarios to putting the ship through its paces and providing real world feedback that can be translated to adjustments on the line of Ds being churned out.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

We might be able to hope for some nice photos of 052D if it shows up at the naval review at qingdao later this month.

The PLAN has come quite a way since 2009. Commissioned a carrier, two more LPDs some AORs, a host of destroyers and frigates (they tripled their 054A count since april 2009!), and a class's worth of corvettes that was commissioned in the space of a year.

I wonder if they'll send Liaoning out for the naval review as well.

Oh, it may well happen. They have sent Type 052Cs in the past...my main point is that it is not likely with the next flotilla. They still have to shake down the Kunming and get her and her new systems up to IOC.

I thought the first 052D (Kunming) was already active and operational

It's been handed over to the Navy and is commissioned.

But almost all new ships, and partoicularly any major combatants, after they are commissioned, go through an official trial and work-up process that may take 12-24 months depending on the vessel and the new systems and technologies it is deployed with. Once those things are fully exercised, the policies developed for their use, and the crew completely trained on the equiment and in the policies and procedures, the vessel will be considered fully operational. Somewhere in that process it will achieve an "Initial Operational Capability," or IOC.

It is not likely that the Kunming, even though she has been handed over and commissioned, will go on any long, cross-seas deployments until that is achieved.

I hope they can get rid of those potholes up front. And 152 Jinan should be commissioned very soon as it has already been 28 months since her launch.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

All of a sudden I remembered my train of thought when I posted some days ago why the number of 052D may stop at 6. Every time I see a frontal picture of the 052D it shows how the main gun turret blocks part of the CIWS coverage, it just makes no sense to me. I would not be surprised if they end up making changes to all the 052Ds to rectify this.

Purely my own guesswork: they probably had a contract for 12x 052Cs but as the new radar, VLS, and RAM became available and prove to be more capable than what is on the 052C they decided to switch to 6x 052Cs and 6x 052Ds with the 052D being a rushed and flawed design stuffing the new systems into the existing hull under certain cost constraints including that of time.

Someone may now have second thoughts about all this especially with the first ship commissioned with such an obvious visually identifiable flaw and being put through its paces as is standard, which also explains why progress on additional 052Ds have slowed.

There were multiple changes made to the 056 even after multiple ships were commissioned. The 056 is a much cheaper, smaller platform using proven components, the PLAN probably learned from that ordeal and doesn't want to have the same experience with the 052D.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I am new to this forum. By the way I am Dan

Any updates on the 5th 052d?

The picture on the pak defence website about two days shows that 5th 052d is progressing extremely rapidly after the launch of 4th type 052d? They even already installed the the 130mm gun on the 5th hull? That is super fast building.

Can anyone verify the image if it is the type 5th 052d in the hall?

If there was a contract for 12x 052Cs, why would they need to rush and build out Ds before even commissioning the rest of the Cs? What time constraint is there in the contract that would prompt completion of Ds before the Cs?
