Alright 174 could be commissioned before the end of this year them. So the PLAN now has 9 Aegis type destroyers...
Hopefully we will soon see the type 052Ds firing long-range cruise missiles in live-firing exercises (or against ISIS, if the latter beheads more Chinese citizens).
Yes...right now China has ten in the water. This is impressive for the PLAN, and they are going to add probably at least 12 more. DDGs, followed by perhaps 8 CGs. That will be a total of 30.

Except for Japan, no one else on earth (outside of the US of course) has as many AEGIS-like vessels.

The Japanese have ten (counting the four Akizuki, four Kongos and two Atago) , but are going to add two more soon...but that will max out at 12..
The Koreans have three and are planning maybe three more..
The Royal Navy has six.
Australia will have three.
France has two.
Italy has two.
Spain has five.
India has three, but is building three or four more.
Norway has five.
The Netherlands have four
Germany has three.

That's a total of 55 ultimately outside of China and the US, with 44 already in the water.

China will have 30, and has ten in the water.

Outside of the US you have a total of 85 ultimately, with currently 54 in the water operating.

Then of course, there is the US Navy.

The US Navy has a total of 63 Burke AEGIS DDGs in the water operating with 6 more building, and nine more after that already funded. They will trial the Zumwalt starting this week, with two more of those building. You add the 22 Tico CGs in there and you have a total of 103 AEGIS or AEGIS-like vessels (with 85 of those already in the water).

Type 052D is a top tier DDG really could do with a good production run

Modern with good firepower

64 cell VLS could provide area defence as well as attack single helo with good range

Type 055 weighing in at over 9,000 tons over 100 VLS twin hanger will be really the heavy lifter in the game

Type 055 backed by scores of Type 052D would give PLAN a very good surface combat unit

Slip in a SSN for under water screening and you have a formidable navy force

去年,某驱逐舰支队准备接装新型导弹驱逐舰,该型舰是舰队的首舰。 为首舰选配首任舰长宛如奠基开山,重要性可想而知。 可结果一出来便引来争议:舰长怎么由张平一担任?

Last year, some destroyer division is preparing to receive a new type of destroyer, which is the first specimen of this class in the fleet. The choice of the first captain for the first vessel is important, but when the results came out the protests are many: why it's Ping ZHANG Yi?

Not really related but it turns out Ping ZHANG Yi is a younger Officer, former commanding officer of Frigate 524 Sanming. Here is a picture of him:

Okay, I think it is important to distinguish between two pieces of news -- one piece of news is an ESF destroyer undergoing training along with other ESF ships (the destroyer in question seemingly being DDG 152, an 052C). This piece of news I think is unrelated to any hypothesis that the ESF may receive Hefei or indeed any 052D.

The other piece of news is separate, which seems to be talking about the need for commanders who are young with fresh ideas... and where Ping Zhang Yi is brought up in regards to a new destroyer type for the destroyer flotilla (jian dui I imagine is their contraction for destroyer flotilla).
However, the article itself does not specify DDG 174 Hefei as the ship that Ping Zhang Yi will command. It may well be that Ping Zhang Yi will be assigned a future 052D to command instead, and that the destroyer flotilla's "preparations" to receive its first 052D is merely in its early stages, and could be for an 052D that is years away.

More importantly, if DDG 174 Hefei was intended for ESF, then we would have likely seen it at one of the ESF's bases during sea trials, as was the case for the last four 052Cs (DDG 150-153) which all operated without (and then with) pennant numbers out of Zhoushan base for extended periods prior to being formally commissioned.
But instead, we have pictures of DDG 174 Hefei operating out of Hainan's Yulin base, which strongly suggests it will be part of SSF (which is also the current consensus I believe).

Therefore, I would say that the document does not suggest DDG 174 Hefei will be given to ESF, rather only that the ESF was preparing to receive an 052D eventually. More importantly, the lack of photos of DDG 174 operating out of any ESF base, and the fact that we have photos of DDG 174 with pennant operating out of Hainan during its late sea trials in the last few weeks/months prior to commissioning, strongly suggests it will be for SSF.

Impressive analysis Jeff, thank you.

I believe the strength of China navy would be roughly 30-35% of the US navy in 2035.
In 2050, the ratio would be ~50-60%.

I agree, this makes sense.

Now what do you think about the cap thing ? :)
