Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

I too think that more and more ships are going the route of truly universal vls systems that launch antiship missiles as well. Harpoon block 3 has that capability, but USN simply doesn't want more ship launched harpoons.
Indians have VLS ashm, russians too. When LRASM derived missile becomes available, us will join (rejoin) that club. Hence, since new chinese VLS is large enough to hold pretty much whatever is needed, i do believe that VLS will be holding antiship missiles in the not so distant future. Maybe some 052d on some missions won't have any, if they're there just to defend Liaoning for example. But then other 052d, a part of a smaller surface task force may have 16 cells filled them. Some future ships like 055, if it does end up having even more VLS cells, may in some situations hold even more.

Back in the 80s Soviets and US did have ships with more than 8 antiship missiles. Cold war ended, priorities changed so armaments changed too. But i definitely see a slow comeback of more than 8 ashms per large ship. Whereeas in the 90s there practically weren't any such designs (aside for those few chinese ones) from 2000 onward we've seen at least 5 different new classes of ships having more ashms as standard loadout. And when lrasm based missile arrives those numbers may double in a matter of years. Are there navies with different needs? Sure, germany's new large frigate won't have any vls for example. But overall, the number of ships capable of launching more and more ashms seems to be rising. I guess we'll see how all that develops in the next decade or so.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

There were no VL Harpoons for the surface ships. The development was canceled as I mentioned That was my point

When they went with the huge build of IIA Burkes, they took the Harpoons out of the design. They decided not to include them because at first they had the VL ASM Tomahawks...but then the US Navy removed those too.

So all of those new build Flight IIA Burkes didn't have any Harpoons.

Anyhow, I thought that is what Tphuang was speaking of.

i'm talking about having no AShM on flight 2 burkes. I'm under the impression that ASM tomahawks got taken out of service because they weren't utilizing the entire range of the missile.

Russian and Western philosophy on these things are different. Russians liked to pack AShM on their ships before and they still do that now. And even then, the ones that were carrying more missiles were the cruisers. Indians seem to follow that line of thinking with its older destroyers like Delhi class and it has continued with Kolkata class. It's designed to carry 16 of Brahmos, but that's a combination of AShM and LACMs. So in practice, how many AShM it carries remains to be seen. Neither cases represent increase in AShM.

Looking at the Western navies, Flight 2 burkes and Type 045 don't have any anti-ship missile on there right now. Most other Western/European "frigates" like Horizon class, FREMM class, F124/125 class, F100 class (also Hobart class), De Zeven class, Iver Huitfeldt class and Nansen class carry 8 subsonic AShM. The only one that really carries more AShM is KDX-3, but that ship is really a cruiser and carries more of everything. There really isn't evidence that they are moving toward carrying more AShM.

PLAN seems to align closer to American/Western philosophy than Russian ones, although what each 052D or the future 055 carry will be mission dependent. In a standard air defence layout, each 052D will probably use 48 VLS for air defense purpose and the remaining 16 cells are split between ASM, LACM and ASROC. We've seen 052C go around without any YJ-62 or LACM cannisters.

Just nitpicking - :)
"De Zeven class" should be "De Zeven Provincien class". The name means "The Seven Provinces", the collective name for the seven countries that formed the Dutch republic before 1795 and of a famous flagship in the 17th century.

Yes, I am aware of the offial name. Many (including me) just shrotened it for space and breviity sake...I believe everyone is aware of what they are.

Sort of like referring to Burke Class instead of Arleigh Burke Class, or Tico instead of Ticonderoga, or Se Jong instead of Se Jong the Great.

Anyhow, that was the idea. I know the offical name is in fact De Zeven Provincien.

Some construction photos of 052s posted last week on Chinese forums. I believe the 3rd one is from slightly earlier.

I don't know.

When I compare your 1st pic (which is the DDG-172, D1), and the third pic (which is C6)...I believe C6 looks every bit as far along, if not further, than D1.

Why do you say D1 is further along than C6?

I also have the Type 052D in 1/350 scale, Kunminmg, DDG-172, coming, but it will not be here for a few weeks.

Re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Guys there was a discussion in this thread (I think three weeks ago) about modern naval guns, CIWS etc. so I'll ask here; look:

Using google, I can't find specifications for this CIWS, how would it do in a comparison like
