Well I don't know if this is the reason. I believe those destroyers use a CODOG arrangement with two diesels and two GT's, whereas other large destroyers use a COGAG arrangement with 4 GT's. China's QC280 or whatever it's called supposedly has a higher output than the original engines used on the Flight I AB's, which were already at 8,000+ tons. China could just start using a COGAG setup for its ships, much more energy-inefficient, but much more power at the same time.

To give some perspective here Álvaro de Bazán class frigate is about 6400 tons and much wider beam 18.6 m vs 17m and it has plenty of roam in the back for some more VLS slots if the Illumination radar is taken out. also I tink GT250000 has a slight power rating then LM2500 baseline.

Awesome! I think it's going to be 4 of these both to the south sea fleet and the north sea fleet before moving on to the next generation destroyer.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Yeah it's pretty clear that this thing is definitely 052D.

The main gun is different (turret itself seems smaller, less bulky than the 100mm and doesn't have the ladders over it), the APAR looks like the one aboard 891 (difficult to tell, it's so blurry but we can't see the shadows of curves ala SAPARS), the windows on the bridge are different (5 vs 7 of 052C or something), even the hull itself looks a little wider (I first pointed this out when the pics of hull 6 and 7s bows protruding out of the building hall emerged. I thought I might have been seeing something that wasn't there, but by the looks of it 052D will indeed be somewhat wider than 052C).

And apparently hull 7 may launch some time next week, so the long wait for 052D is finally coming to an end.

OMG, Happy times ahead. The shipyard of China really sprang into life for the navy. Large number of warships are being build.

I think the period now is comparable to Cheng He ship ship building building times in Ming dynasty.

according chinese website,CIWS will be 11 barrell gatling gun.HQ-16 rather than HQ-9,the UHF band radar been deleted ,but,no mention what type of radar will it replace.DH-10 will replace YJ-62.
lastly single 130mm gun replacing the 100mm naval gun.

Definitely a rather interesting day in PLAN followers world. This looks to be the first of the 052Ds. We will find out soon enough what the configurations are outside of what we can see now. That should be the much speculated 130 mm gun at front. The MFRs are clearly using the new type that's been tested out on the test ships.

Probably, but I still believe the new design need to be larger, cross the 9000t displacement threshold to be of any significant improvement...plus larger compliment of hot-launch modular VLS, cruise missile capability, 2-helicopters handling capacity.
