re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Going by the observation in post # 1092, Hull 4, which was launched in July, may be expected to be commissioned (in ESF) in July 2012, or a bit earlier, since the launch was apparently delayed (ought to have been in May, if they build them at 6-month intervals).

that last picture is definitely the third one before it was about to join service. The 4th one still got quite a bit to go.
I have seen number three launched, trialed, and now in service. I have not seen pictures of the launching of number 4. I believe number 4 is still in the manufacturing facility nearing completion. Is this your impresssion Tphuang? Or do you believe it is already launched and awaiting trials?

If so, is that number five we now see nearing completion in the manufacturing facility?

I had thought number five had just started initial stages of construction.

What's your read on it?

If you would care to go back to posts # 909 and 910 (22.07.11) you will see both Hull 3 and 4 in the fitting-out basin at Jiangnan.

Number 3 has just joined service. That last picture was from end of November.

Number 4 was launched a while ago. Here is its picture from end of November

The one you see in the hall is Number 5. That ones should launch soon based on the recent pictures.

For number 6, a good number of its modules are outside, although they may have started assembling it behind Number 5 already.

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

definately, second only to the likes of Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding which are a true testimont to American industrial capacity over a prolonged period of time

btw why do you think Type 071 will comprise only 4 units?

Hunch, mostly. PLAN builds ships in batches of 2 or 4. A spurious argument would be that they will be running out of pennant numbers after 998, 999, 988, 989 (they could of course start to re-use 901 -908, which must have been old ex-US LST’s).

I must admit that I only expected two. I guess that the second pair is for 5 Landing Ship Flotilla at Shanghai-Wusong.

I really do not see any requirement for more than 4. As a great power attribute, that corresponds to what France and Britain have, and what the Russians will get when they have their 4 MISTRAL’s.

Nobody really expects to see China send troops abroad do any time soon, the way Western powers do.

"The ship’s hanger on the stern of the vessel will accommodate two all-weather Ka-28 ASW helicopters carrying torpedoes and depth charges, and capable of operating up to 200km from the ship."

I think this ship only has hanger space for 1 helicopter? The space to the right of the hanger doors are probably taken by HQ-9 missile magazine and below-deck ammo magazine for the Type 730 CIWS gun.
