A snippet from a short Q&A between a Hong Kong Commercial Daily reporter and a Political Commissar of the PLAN Yuan Huazhi (猿华智) during the recent Two Sessions in Beijing:

Q: "Some comments online speculated that the delay in announcing details may be due to technical bottlenecks. Is this true?"
A: "There are no technical bottlenecks in China's aircraft carrier construction."

Q: "Will the fourth aircraft carrier be nuclear-powered?"
A: "It will be announced very soon."

The construction of the fourth aircraft carrier will also continue to enhance China's maritime strength.

Yuan Huazhi also emphasized that China's aircraft carrier is not built to compete with the United States, but to protect the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and protect the country's rights and interests.

TBH, nothing new really. Though, it would be really nice if pop3 is still around in that forum today...

atleast one thing is clear now..

there is no technological bottleneck to build nuclear powered aircraft carrier.. because some people were doubting..

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced the multi-purpose modular small reactor at the same time when the aircraft carrier Fujian was launched. In CNNC's own words, this reactor can be carried on submarines, ships, rockets, aircraft carrier and other devices.

how off am I in saying that looks more like a carrier reactor than a sub reactor? Or do all reactors look kinda the same?

They are similar in design concept but physical dimension of reactors are different in submarine and carrier. also power output of reactor used in carrier is much more than Submarine..

CNNC announced multi-purpose small reactor is a technological demonstrator. can be used in multiple devices with little modifications..

Even though I am inclined to the 4th being CVN, I must say that the PLAN commissar did not indicate anything about 4th being nuclear. It is only the question put on him by the reporter painting CVN. The commissar only replied "will tell you something soon about whatever you asked".

The reporter was fishing, trying to get him say something she wanted to know, he gave nothing. The commissar was acting like the spokeperson of FM, "I will share information with you when I have it."

Key word is soon. It is much more informative than "we will talk about it when ready." 004 nuclear or not resolving this year.

What can we determine about Chinese future policy in nuclear vs non nuclear? Since it is not a technical bottleneck the considerations must be economic and political.
