Actually gas turbines for emergency extra power seems a perfectly possible idea, they are much easier to start and much lighter than boiler complexes and can draw on the aviation kerosene supply when needed. Many conventional ships have small secondary engines( often diesel piston engines) so I can't see why a CVN must be purely nuclear.

Every carrier has a backup supply even nuclear ones. Emergency generators do not need exhausts so large that they rival the full size main engines on conventional carrier, in fact most CVN had auxiliary exhaust on the side of the hull, you could probably find a picture of it on the Ford if you look for it.
