They had the upper hand initially but were completely overwhelmed. Most social media is western based. Losses have been similar on both sides, but 90% of losses being posted on twitter are Russian.

It doesn't really matter in the end. Armenia was overwhelming winning the social media war against Azerbaijan right until the end of the war. When people found out it was all a lie, they stormed government buildings.
It's partly of their own choice. Russian troops were not allowed to bring smartphones with them. Similarly for the Ukranians soldiers, I think. Most of the photos/videos we get are uploads from Ukrainian civilians. Therefore, the inherent bias should not be surprising.

Perhaps the choice of an armored assault on the Capital was a flawed strategy to begin with?
Is there any doubt about this?

Armoured units entering a fortified/heavily-defended big city is a death sentence for them.

If I am sitting in an armoured unit and you tell me to drive inside a fortified city I would be sh*tting myself

Let (a lot) airstrikes, recon/ISR elements, drones for CAS, to happen first and then we can talk about entering the city (WITH a lot of infantry)

They don't necessarily have to fight on twitter, they could provide footage everywhere else and people will repost them because people want to see war footages

Obviously, the Russian generals thought it might be a good idea.

Nah fam. If Putin doesn't take it ALL guess who will be joining NATO, and be received with open arms? Talk about an own-goal.
If Ukraine still exists after this war, there's no way it will join NATO. I doubt it will ever even join the EU now. They may get lots of funding and military support, but they will have to fight Russia on their own.

Americans will not want to be dragged into a war over an eastern European country.
