The report from Global Times clarified the timeline of the events:
China's nuclear power giant CGN dismisses reports of leak warning at a Guangdong facility, says indicators 'normal'
All indicators of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in Taishan, South China's Guangdong Province and its surrounding environment are normal, according to continued monitoring data, the China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), the operator of the plant, said in a statement sent to the Global Times on Monday, refuting reports of an alleged fission gas leak at the plant.
...
The Chinese nuclear giant made the clarification after a CNN report said on Monday that the US government is assessing a report of a leak at the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant, a joint venture between French energy giant Électricité de France (EDF) and China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), after Framatome, a subsidiary of EDF warned of an "imminent radiological threat."

Framatome reached out to the US Department of Energy late May and informed the US agency of a "potential issue" at the Taishan plant, CNN said. The company later submitted an operational safety assistance request to the US agency on June 3, in which it warned that the nuclear reactor is leaking fission gas.

Framatome also claimed that Chinese authority was raising the limits for radiation around the plant in order to keep it running, the report said.

On Monday, Framatome told AFP that "the plant is currently operating within the safety parameters," based on the data available. It said it is "supporting resolution of a performance issue" at the plant.

"Asked for examples, the senior Biden administration official ticked off several: “Advanced fighter airplanes, hypersonic technologies, very effective radars … battle integration systems that link different services more effectively, nuclear propulsion with respect to submarines, night vision — I mean, I could go on and on. Those are all areas that Russia and China have worked closely on together.

that Russia and China have been conducting joint military exercises “of increasing frequency and complexity.” The countries’ technological cooperation, they wrote, “might eventually allow them to innovate faster together than the United States can on its own.”

Never heard of China-Russia collaboration in either nuclear propulsion on submarines or night vision.
It would make sense but never heard of it. To the best of my knowledge China has had more advanced tank night vision systems than Russia and their infantry night sights are also more advanced and produced in much higher numbers. Yet I never heard of Russia getting systems from China. Russian tank night sights were based on licensed French technology for example. Even recently I read reports about how Russia tortuously imported US infantry night vision systems.

There is a lot more evidence that China have gotten know how on nuclear submarine propulsion from the US based on civilian sources. And the Chinese have historically gotten help from the French with regards to submarine sonar and the like.

The United States constantly uses technology originally developed by their allies. AESA radar was originally used in fighters by the Japanese, the Abrams tank main gun is a licensed German design, they put Israeli Trophy APS system on Abrams, they used UK designed Chobam armor in Abrams, I could continue. Compare this with Russia and China and I think you would see they already have the capability and in a lot of cases can out innovate the US on their own as is. It would be nice if China and Russia collaborated properly but I doubt it will happen.

The US has had the benefit of massive technology transfers from its allies at least all the way from WWII. The British basically gave them access to all their advanced technology (Tizard mission) and they also scooped up German technology after the war ended (Project Paperclip).

Australia has been poking the Dragon:
1. Huawei 5G ban
2. Interference in China's internal affairs (Hong Kong, Taiwan)
3. Public demand for an investigation into Wuhan's COVID-19 origin
4. Nonstop Australian interference in China's Xinjiang province

My comment: point 3, the public COVID demand, is far more serious than you may think. Western media makes light of it, implying that China's strong reaction was unreasonable. But in diplomacy, a demand as public as Australia's is completely out of line, a slap in the face. According to Kishore Mahbubani, a veteran diplomat with 33 years of experience (ten of which was at the United Nations), China was completely in the right to react harshly.

I think australia understand completely that its on the path of self destruction, its just that morrison really has no choice, he was beholden by the national security establishment that is totally infiltrated by the cia
The last time an australian prime minister went against the cia (paul keating if im not mistaken) he was fired by the governor general, same fate would have befallen morrison had he try to do the same

Thats why quasi China russia alliance gives them such a nightmare to the point that they need to consume xanax everynight just to get them a good night sleep lmao

Just finished reading the whole article and I must say the thrust and theme of the message along with the strategies the two authors are recommending are nothing new in the sun. What's worse, is that it assumes that Russia and China's leadership are composed of infantile, naive people that have yet to incorporate the strategic calculus these two Georgetown American professors are pushing for.

I also couldn't help but read the article in a combination of both bewilderment and amazement just how brazen, craven liars the 2 professors were when it comes to their accusations of disinformation on covid-19 allegedly by China without providing a single shred of evidence or example; the accusation that China and Russia are trying to weaken the democratic institutions in America or those of many western democracies when the reality is that it's the failures and failings of western institutions and leaders that have brought them the fissures and systemic problems their countries people are beginning to wake up from.

China and Russia didn't create a scenario or situation where it pushed the Capitol rioters and looters to subvert their own countries election results, that was the by product of their own making and rather than taking an introspective approach to the systemic issues their countries are facing, like a typical dead beat dad, or a cheating w..re, it instead deflect the responsibility and culpability towards the other and that's China and Russia.

One can't help but also noticed the irony in the article in that if you replace or interchange U.S. with China and then U.S. and it's democratic allies with China and Russia, the descriptions of what Russia and China are going through and have been subjected to by both the U.S. and her allies are more apt picture of the current geopolitical situation.

If these are the strategic play that the U.S. best minds can come up with, I say good luck.

Chinese EPR experiences 'performance issue'

14 June 2021

Unit 1 of the Taishan nuclear power plant is operating at full power and there has been no release of radiation at the plant or in the surrounding area, China General Nuclear (CGN) announced yesterday following media reports of a leak at the plant in China's Guangdong province. France's EDF, which holds a 30% stake in the two-unit plant, said it had been informed of an increase in the concentration of certain noble gases in the EPR reactor's primary circuit.

Taishan 1 and 2 are the first two reactors based on the EPR design to begin operating anywhere in the world so far. They form part of an EUR 8.0 billion (USD 9.7 billion) contract signed by Areva and CGN in November 2007. The Taishan project - 140 kilometres west of Hong Kong - is owned by TNPJVC, a joint venture between CGN (51%), French utility EDF (30%) and the Chinese utility Guangdong Energy Group (19%). Unit 1 of the power plant started construction in 2009, followed by unit 2 in 2010. The 1750-megawatt EPRs entered commercial operation in December 2018 and September 2019, respectively. The EPR design adopted in Taishan was developed by Framatome.

Taishan 1 has entered the second fuel cycle and is currently operating at full power, CGN noted. Taishan 2 has completed its first overhaul and was successfully reconnected to the grid on 10 June. "The safety, quality, and construction period of the overhaul have all completed the set goals," the company added.

"Since it was put into commercial operation, the Taishan nuclear power plant has strictly controlled the operation of the units in accordance with the operating licence documents and technical procedures," CGN said. "All operating indicators of the two units have met the requirements of nuclear safety regulations and power plant technical specifications.

"At present, continuous monitoring of environmental data shows that the environmental indicators of the Taishan nuclear power plant and its surroundings are normal."

EDF said today it has been informed of the increase in the concentration of certain noble gases in the primary circuit of Taishan 1. However, it noted this is "a known phenomenon, studied and provided for in the reactor operating procedures".

The French company said that, as a shareholder of TNPJVC, it has requested the holding of an extraordinary meeting of the TNPJVC board of directors in order for management to "present all the data and the necessary decisions".

Framatome said it is "supporting resolution of a performance issue" with the Taishan plant. "According to the data available, the plant is operating within the safety parameters," it said. "Our team is working with relevant experts to assess the situation and propose solutions to address any potential issue."

There are three further EPR reactors under construction worldwide, including Flamanville 3 in France, Olkiluoto 3 in Finland and Hinkley Point C in the UK.
