I imagine both countries have already agree on areas they will welcome open competition (south america) and some of the no-go zones like ukraine, syria, taiwan, scs etc

There are reports that Putin when he first came in power he really believed US wouldnt be hostile and he tried to be 'friends'. But then came the Georgia, and Ukraine 'color revolution' and he felt utterly betryed by the West's "promises and guarantees"...
Then the 2014 massive western sanctions on Russia further solidified that the stance that Russia is looking East now and the US cant do anything to change that
Merkel and that Macaroon from France understand that, and they are trying to at least keep Russia a bit engaged with the West. The Nord Stream 2 shenanigans and the attempted 'color revolution' with Navalny have shown to Russians that the EUpoors are also not to be trusted anymore
Russia is now going to the East fully committed
