If what the engineer was saying is correct, the AP round should be able to penetrate T-72s, since T-72s (especially T-72M [monkey version] and early T-72B) are not considered 3rd generation battle tanks.

He specifically said it could penetrate the side armors of 3rd and 3rd+ generation tanks. It could penetrate the front armor of 2nd generation tanks.

Irony here: T-72(64/80) actually has the thickest base steel side armor among its peers, at 80mm.
And even taking modern mammoths with urban kits into account, those are mostly against HEAT. Very few of them are likely to stop 130-140mm of direct KE penetration. Especially since we're talking about autocannon, there won't be just one hit.
