The position of the elevators, the size and position of the island and the lack of jet blast deflectors on the deck or a CIWS system for self defense are all things i have mentioned before about the Vikramaditya.

Nothing they can really do about the elevators or the island without having to spend a LOT more money. I believe they could have added jet blast deflectors and am at a loss as to why they did not.

The CIWS will be forthcoming, and even though it will be some time before they have the really strong defense they envision, I bet that throw some AK-630s or maybe a couple of Kashtans on there for something. Actually two Kashtans and four AK-630s would be a decent defense for the time being if they would do it.

As it is, despite all of this, the Virkamaditya with its Mig-29Ks is going to be a huge upgrade over the Viraat.

i'm sure CIWS will be coming too. Just a matter of which ones they are getting. Regarding JBDs, what are some of the bad side affects on the deck if it's not there? I'd imagine it would make things dangerous for the crew members.

Safety is the biggest problem...for crew members, for equipment, for other aircraft, etc.

I remember I have read some some discussion on Indian forums why no blast deflectors . Apparently , they concluded that they would do more harm then good - because of the tight space they would have to sit close to aircraft engines and their angle to deck would have to be low (something like 45 degrees) . Furthermore , plane would have only few seconds in after-burning mode before take off (there is only so much heat deflectors could handle ) . On the other hand , without deflectors jet stream would simply go overboard and not towards people and other aircraft.

That's only true for the back launch position, but in the forward launch position the jet blasts will go towards people and planes in the back. So far we haven't seen any plane launches from the forward position yet.

Most likely forward launch position will be used only in emergency with limited load . In that case area about 20m behind engines will have to be cleared . Btw , jet exhaust is hot (around 700 C normal mode , up to 2500 C with afterburner ) but it is directed and cools down rapidly . Look at the guy at 0:42 ;)
