NEW DELHI: After a long running saga of hard-nosed negotiations since the late-1990s, cost escalations, refit delays and mishaps, aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya has finally completed its extensive sea trials in Russia. The 44,570-tonne warship, or the refurbished Admiral Gorshkov, is now all set to be handed over to India in mid-November.

Defence ministry sources on Tuesday said INS Vikramaditya has "now successfully" finished its series of "sustained full-power and aviation trials" in the White and Barents seas. "The carrier will now head back to the harbour at Severodvinsk. It will then be made ready for the commissioning on November 15. It will reach Indian shores, with an Indian crew commanded by Captain Suraj Berry, in early-2014," said a source.

Centerline fuel tank, two ASMs, two A2As, on Mig-29K preparing to take off of Vikramaditya.

Looks like Kh-35 . Considering the configuration of carrier and maximum take-off weight , I guess they will form strike groups of 4 , max 6 planes . That means 8 , max 12 , missiles - not enough to attack large CSGs , but enough to attack small flotillas made of frigates and/or destroyers .

Mig corporation is all set to start training Indian Mig-29k pilots for aircraft carrier operations onboard Ins Vikramaditya soon, Indian Mig-29k pilots who have been flying from Naval air base INS Hansa in India for past few years have been closely watching Naval Mig-29 operations on board INS Vikramaditya for past few months.

Until now Russian MiG Corporation Test pilots Mikhail Belyaev, Sergei and Andrei Rybnikov Shishov have been carrying out all the required tests on INS Vikramaditya but also have been constantly interacting with Indian Mig-29k pilots on board the INS Vikramaditya giving them a chance to observe Takeoffs and landings from the deck of the ship, flight tests began on 5 August of this year.

Commodore Surendra Ahuja who is overseeing flight operations on board INS Vikramaditya, was in 2007 became first Indian pilot who graduated in United States and was certified for aircraft carrier operations on T-45 Goshawk aircraft. He has already mastered flying the MiG-29k in India and will be among first group of pilots who will carry out operational landings and takeoff from the carrier soon.

Apparently the US has collaborated with the Indians in training because the T-45 Goshawk is the US Navy aircraft carrier training jet.

At 2:30 in translation he says before they never had air con or access to fresh water, but on this FFG he said they have AC which keeps them cool and access to fresh water for showering 24 hours a day

This does not mean there is a desalination plant on board but I'm curious if it does or not, if so it would be huge development

I don't think we ever had any confirmation of desalination plants on board Chinese warships

Partly because I don't think it's been something we need to "confirm" — it's always been something you see as normal and standard, even on older ships.

Reason I say is because the Type 903 always go into ports during Aden missions for Fuel, food and fresh water

It's routinely reported that they dock ports to take on fresh water, so kind of confusing since resuppying fresh water could sometimes be expensive it would be much easier to just desalinate onboard the replenishment tankers, no doubt the fuel consumption sky rockets when on board desalination units are running but it's part of the over all capability the Type 903 should bring

Whoa dejavu I swear there was a similar discussion regarding desalination a while ago.

And like you said, desalination for every task would be an inefficacious use of the machine and fuel etc. For instance, the fresh water their AORs take on board is probably just drinking water, whereas desalination plants onboard each ship would be used for showers, running machinery, washing, etc. So news of 903s "resupplying fresh water" actually doesn't wholly convey the whole story.

I also wonder if simply buying bottled water in bulk and storing it on 903 would be cheaper than desalination at sea.

Now that's a good point, water is of two uses, drinking and secondly for everything else, plus you can't drink desalinated water can you??

Maybe they make water for everything else and then they do port visits for fresh water which is for drinking

I wonder when they are doing the side by side replenishments are they doing fresh water for drinking or for general water usage, I think that is general water replenishment for washing etc because usually they have pressure gauges attached

For drinking water I would think they do that through VERTREP, grey area thinks me

Pretty sure side by side replenishments are for fuel (assuming you're talking about the pipes they connect ships with).

And almost all modern chinese ships should have desalination plants, and the only necessity for water replenishment from the AOR would be crates of bottled water for drinking I think. It's not like they source desalinated water from the AOR itself... because each ship has their own plant anyway.
