American Asian (Chinese) would rather be doctors or businessmen than get into the entertainment industry

There are no shortage of successful and good black actors, or singers, or Latinos/Hispanics

There is no ceiling rather than the one they impose themselves upon

Japanese and Korean pop culture are appreciated in the west because they produce good stuffs

I agree.
I think we should first recognize what is the stereotype towards Asians. It comes with the good and the bad. The good is of course the industrious, smart, law-abiding achievers and not aggressive. This sorta allowed us to get through airports with more ease, less suspected as terrorists, and less chances of getting pulled over for being thought of as criminals. In a sense, we are model minorities. Almost seemed like perks, but then the bad sides are pretty bad too.

On the bad side, we are scapegoats, we steal their jobs, we have small packages(which is false), won't stand up for ourselves, too soft, men are asexual, women are exotic submissive sexual objects for fetish who desires white men, and we don't have eyes. There are more like bad drivers, but they're pretty minor, and it's even funny how this one starts because you never see Asians in car accidents LOL. And then there are the authoritarian parents and Asian nerdy kids who are unsocial. Everything in this paragraph are negative and are false stereotypes.

With all those said, there aren't technically "good" or "bad" Asians. We are all grouped into one geopolitical region, and since most of the racisms towards Asians occurred before recognizing the person's ethnicity, it's less to do with nationality and more to do with simply skin color. With that said, a Japanese or Chinese or Korean will still be called ching-chong right in the beginning. Any racisms that occur after knowing the person's nationalities will still be ignorance, but might be now more nationality-related. And Japanese-Asians are likely to suffer from the bigot's ignorance of the country, mainly sex-related such as Asian fetish or stereotypes from Japanese products such as manga and Hentai. Koreans will suffer from the idiot thinking the person is from the North, and Chinese will mainly be for political reasons. Grasping against Taiwanese, Singapore, and Hong Kong will be slightly harder because there's slightly "less" stereotypes and knowledge about these particular regions, but if you're from a country with its significant nation-culture, then you may suffer from some random ignorance and stereotypes about that country(for example, Thai, Viet)

Usually stereotypes can be changed by more traveling experiences, cross-cultural exchanges and studies, and keeping an open-mind.

stereotype will succeed when the victim enforce that view

the lack of Asian(Chinese) actors or talents in American entertainment industry is simply a matter of the small number of American Chinese as a minority, compounded with the lack of interest in the field/career

the lack Chinese pop culture influence, is simply the matter of a industry that has not caught up with the rest of the world, or too busy saturating itself domestically

first sentence receives my stamp of approval as social psychology major. as for chinese pop culture influence, i'd say this is more to do with two things: decline of cantopop culture (full of sh!t these days, and that's coming from someone who used to listen to quite a bit), and the other being mainland chinese pop culture hasn't caught up to par completely as being trendy and cool. for example a lot has some really freaking weird names, very uninteresting physical image/fashion/appearance (even if the person dresses fashionably, it's probably something that can be found everywhere in an asian nightclub), and terrible marketing schemes (staying within china only appeals to chinese audiences, but no one else in HK or taiwan will even know that person)

Yes you can say talents matter more, but how far did Susan Boyle go? And even someone like Adele, although still a bit on the chubby side, will demonstrate a huge difference simply for being younger and more physically appealing than Boyle (and couple great hits made the difference). At the end of the day it's still all about having something that people can catch onto and then for the star to use to propel self into stardom and define their career.

canton pop/HK pop failed (and still fails) to innovate itself, and the talent pool is too small to pull something like the K-Pop

mainland pop culture is tied to the social economic development
for now it's still appalling, i can hardly watch this guy (Zhou Li Bo), or maybe my Mandarin is just not that good
or that talk show debate where they looked like they are going to kill someone when they are speaking out
Zhou.jpg

the good things are probably happening underground, and i have no doubt the modern Chinese are having fun themselves
when life is easy and boring, people will start doing stupid (but funny) things to excite themselves :D

another thing to note is that communism is boring, and by boring i mean it is literally boring. when i was in china i noticed the following's on tv:

historical war films praising the communists of the 30s and the civil war and politics again
shows about qing dynasty courts and their politics, then back to modern politics
communist music shows. i'd rather watch high school musical, and i hate that sh!t already, and then politics

i'll be fair, that there are occasional non-political dramas with nothing to do with military, but then usually they're pointless because i don't even know who they are

the only non-political things to mention will be some talent shows, which ok they are acceptable...."somehow"

oh and the commercials. they SUCK basketBALLS. they're lame, and i hate those 2 classic mandarin speaker voices (male sounds like some old man whose got huge lungs and everything is gonna explode, while the female sounds like some old lady who will burst into some high pitch "not till the fat lady screams" kinda thing

and then more politics

i think the only friendly program over there would be the weather forecasts..

you might have some occasional discover channel stuff, but then again do i really wanna go home at the end of the day just to watch ants crawling around?

if i were to live in china, my tv will only be connected to the ps3 otherwise i won't even buy it...or maybe i'll do what will smith did in I am Legend..

hey i watched CCTV since childhood, and even by today's standard they have improved a lot, some shows are actually enjoyable now, either by content or production value

it was literally North Korean entertainment values back then (not too long ago)

now they are starting to put English subtitles, and produce some foreign oriented shows
stations like the CNTV is a good effort but pales when compared to say Arirang

Eh, I could say the same thing about HK TV. To me, all those HK actors sound more or less the same when they're speaking Cantonese.

I remember watching a HK sitcom first in dubbed Mandarin, and then in original Cantonese, and thinking to myself: wow, I can't even tell who's speaking anymore! I watched at least 3 seasons of the show when Mandarin dubbing was available, but quit after a few episodes into the Cantonese version, even though subtitle was available.

As for the politics in Mainland shows, you just have to roll your eyes and ignore it for a bit. If you get worked up by the occasional political mantra, then you'd obviously not enjoy the show. If you just let it slide, then you can savor the main entrée much better.

Well I'm sure I can differentiate them because they sound different in my ears, and I was referring to those default interface voices for commercials and stuff.

Anyways topics on military and politics are like dull, heavy stuffs to me....not stuffs I'd wanna talk about on a Friday night or Sunday morning, and certainly if I want to kick back and relax, will be the last thing I'd want to watch on TV after a long tiring day.

Not sure what channel you're watching, but when I'm in China, most of them was broadcasting Dating Shows, Idol Shows, and all kinds of TV Series, most of which is impossible to watch unless you've followed it from the start.

So I don't watch much TV when I'm in China. Of course, I don't watch *any* TV when I'm here either.

Hey, who needs TV when I can go shoot a Super Mutant with my sniper rifle? ;)
