I think this incident sets a pretty striking precedent. It shows the world that China is willing to use force against a US treaty ally, and doesn't face much consequence in doing so. Anyone else notice that the US is pretty quiet about this?

Also sends a message that Philippines is on their own if shit hits the fan, despite all the hoohaa about the kangaroo court arbitration just a couple days ago

stick fighting isn't really count as "willing to use force" in today standard . china did that before with india who have nuclear weapon ...the fight even more serious than this (soldiers die both side)

india china no guns treaty exist for a reason ...so ...yeah guns fire matter that the minimum requirement for "willing to use force"

It barely crosses the threshold for use of force.

But maybe that's the reason. You want to use enough just to show them your position but not enough that people care. If the other guy still back off while you don't really pay much of a price since no one else cares, that's a pretty good cost to benefit ratio.
