Re: New Generation Fighter

May be it stands for Cheng Fei (Chengdu Aircraft Company).

Thanks RedSky! But I still have no idea as to what the SIN-93 looks like. I know that Xian has in the works something referred to as "Flying Leopard III," is that what Challenge was referring to I wonder? Also at Cheng Fei (Chengdu Aircraft Company) there are also reports of a much improved J-10 that has also been carrying out taxi trials, as well as the J-20 trials. The improved J-10 is an improvement of the J-10B, according to the rumors.

Re: New Generation Fighter

With an aircraft as large as the J-20 appears to be, it will require an engine with very high thrust margins, such as the upcoming WS-15 afterburning turbofan, which is supposed to be in the 17,000-ton thrust category. It is reported though that the Russian Saturn AL-31FN turbofans are in the two prototypes 2001 and 2002.;)

Re: New Generation Fighter

I remembered a news article in Xinhua sometimes ago said China always adopts proven engines in their new designs (military or civil alike) to speed up the development then try to install indigenous ones only when they are safely ready.

Another new pic of J-20

Is that a canard or lerx? if it's a canard and the J-XX still has frontal RCS close or equal to the raptors than the CAC engineers must be on to something here!

Now is there any doubter out there?.They are proven wrong again like so many times. CAC once again prove their worth. Yes this is the real deal.

IMO A bit premature with the self congratulations. A rumour from janes, is that the chinese are supposed to be using 117S engines, so until China is truely able develop equally capable indigenous engines you've got diddly squat if the Russians play hardball with the supply.
on another note some other interesting info from Janes

Re: New Generation Fighter

that picture was very likely photoshopped, looks really real, probably done by some pro. i got this feeling because PLAAF tradition is to keep the body yellow until formally entering service. Even if this was formally painted, it shouldve have been the common grayish colour used by the PLAAF, the one we see in the picture looks almost like the jak series soviet planes from the 70's.
the biggest reason that i say this is a fake is because i have watched a chinese military show before, the analyst said clearly that china would do it similar to what the russians did, which they would do the 3rd gen, 3.5, then finally into the 4th generation fighter, instead of the american way, jumping directly from 3rd generation into the radical revolutionary f-22. this guy was a professor of the chinese defense academy, an ex-sailor, probably also does analysis for the pla as well. so he is very credible

Did Janes offer any evidence or did they say it was just wishful thinking ? LOL

Re: New Generation Fighter

huh? what do you mean the USAF jumped straight from 3rd gen to F-22? What do you call the f-117s, the F-18 and the later versions of F 15s, F16s etc? they are all 4th generation airplanes! actually more like 4.5 in the later versions.
Also you are erroneously comparing the western definition of "generation" to the chinese aircraft. Generally speaking the chinese is one generation earlier so a 4th Gen is roughly equivalent to a 5th Gen in western terminology.
On a related note comparing aircraft vs aircraft is usually pointless and exercise in futility as you probably know by now.
