Interesting look at the extent of China's dependency on ME crude oil:

High percentage of oil import from Middle East and Iran in 2025 was mainly due to China's strong effort to build up their strategic oil reserve rather than for consumption for the year 2025. And it was done at the right time as we can see how China's resilient against current oil shortage is.

And if the Europeans will to totally stop buying Russian oil, the Russians will just divert them to China through pipelines. Other than net oil export countries, China is one of the top least affected countries by US/Isreal vs Iran war.

China found World's 2nd-largest rare earth mine in Sichuan region after latest round of exploration.

The most significant find came from the Maoniuping rare earth mine in Mianning county, Sichuan Province, where total rare earth oxide resources reached almost 9.67 million tonnes. The deposit, now the world's second-largest producing light rare earth mine after China's Bayan Obo area in Inner Mongolia, represents a more than 200% increase from previously identified reserves. An additional 27.13 million tonnes of fluorite and 37.22 million tonnes of barite were also found as associated resources.

Surveys also revealed 27.1 million tonnes of

and 37.2 million tonnes of baryte, qualifying the site as a “super-large” deposit for both minerals.

Among major economies, China has the lowest dependence on oil and natural gas as primary energy source.

I still think China will have to start rationing on petrol if the war doesn't end in a few months.

According to Nikkei, China overtook Japan to be the global top seller of new vehicles for the first time in 2025.
China surpassed Japan in global new vehicle sales by country for the first time last year, claiming the world's top spot.

Nikkei reported on the 22nd, citing data from market research firm MarkLines. Chinese automakers sold approximately 27 million new vehicles last year, up about 10% from the previous year. Japanese automakers, meanwhile, saw sales decline slightly to approximately 25 million units. This marks the first time since 2000 that Japan has failed to rank first in global new vehicle sales, according to Nikkei.

By company, Toyota Motor of Japan maintained its undisputed lead with 11.32 million units sold, but Chinese automakers showed remarkable growth overall. Both BYD and Geely Group of China outsold Japan's Honda and Nissan. While BYD and Geely Group increased sales year-over-year, Honda and Nissan posted declines. In electric vehicles alone, BYD overtook Tesla of the United States to claim the global top position. The company's growth was attributed to strong overseas expansion driven by low-cost EV exports.

The gap will be widenining over the years, there is no competitive Japanese EV cars at the moment. I haven't got my first EV (yet), still with Corolla hybrid which is excellent and cheaper to operate in NZ than EV, as EV since last year have to pay RUG (Road User Charge) while hybrid cars don't, except plug-in hybrid.

There are more and more Chinese EV and hybrid that I can see on the NZ road, and Toyota recently quite heavy in promotion, which didin't happen at all in the past

This is a bit misleading. Chinese brand of cars are overwhelmingly sold inside China, while Japanese brands are mostly sold overseas. Which means the amount of actual foreign usage of Chinese cars is still significantly lower than Japanese cars.
