Preliminary negotiations in advance of Trump's visit (now delayed) went smoothly. Needless to say the US team, esp. Bessent, have plenty on their plates already dealing with the economic fallout of Hormuz. So all the Chinese team has to do is sound somewhat reasonable, and let them rush through the motions before running off to piss on Trump's latest fire. Sure, China is important. But Iran is important and urgent, so it gets all the attention and focus. That's exactly how the important but non-urgent details get overlooked, and how the leverage slowly but steadily accumulates on the non-US side of the table.

PARIS, March 15 (Reuters) - Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials held "remarkably stable" talks in Paris on Sunday that touched on ‌potential areas of agreement in agriculture, critical minerals and managed trade for U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider in Beijing, two sources familiar with the talks said. The sources told Reuters that the "candid and constructive" Paris talks led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng would set in motion possible "deliverables" for Trump's trip to China to meet with Xi at the end of March.

"All these meetings were to create stability, and today was remarkably stable," one of the sources said of the talks.

The two sides ‌discussed the establishment of new formal mechanisms to help manage trade and investment between the world's two largest economies that may be considered by Trump and Xi in Beijing, the sources said. Technical talks on the proposed U.S.-China "Board of Trade" and "Board of Investment" were expected on Monday. One of the sources said that the Board of Trade was the more developed of the two proposals, and would be aimed at finding products and sectors where the U.S. and China could increase trade in a balanced way without compromising each other's national security or critical supply chains.

The Board of Investment would not set broad investment policies but would address "discrete investment issues" that may arise between the countries, the source said.

This is the actual non-meme version of doing nothing and winning. Always ensure you're the second-biggest problem in the room, not the first, and by the time they remember you're there it's far too late.

President Trump said Monday that he spoke to a former president about bombing Iran.
• An aide for George W. Bush says that “they haven’t been in touch."
• An aide to Bill Clinton says that whoever Trump was referring to was not Clinton.
• An Obama aide says “no recent conversations” have taken place between Barack Obama and Trump.
• A source familiar with the matter said the former president Trump was referring to was not Joe Biden.

Technically speaking, the 45th President of the United States is indeed one of the predecessors to the incumbent 47th President of the United States. So I suppose it does make sense (to him):

Next month, Trump: I am pulling all US forces out of the ME because they just don’t appreciate all we do for them and so don’t deserve our protection any more!

Month after that: I have ordered the Gulf Countries to stop selling oil in USD. Using the USD is a great privilege and they don’t deserve it any more!
